WSO To Perform Works Of Mozart & Bruckner

WATERBURY — The Waterbury Symphony Orchestra and Music Director and Conductor Leif Bjaland will present a performance on Sunday, January 15, at 3 pm, at the Fine Arts Center at Naugatuck Valley Community College, 750 Chase Parkway.

The program includes Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 in E Major and Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 3.

The Symphony No. 7 in E Major is one of Bruckner’s most popular works, demonstrating the composer’s deeply held religious and spiritual beliefs.

The new year will mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of Mozart, one of the world’s greatest composers. Violin Concerto No. 3, an early work dating from 1775, is joyful and melodic, offering charms and delights of all kinds.

Violinist Timothy Fain, the featured soloist, won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions at the age of 22. A recent review described him as “a charismatic young prize-winning violinist…with strong musical instincts…(Boston Globe) and The Washington Post wrote, “Timothy Fain has everything he needs for a spectacular career.”

There will be a special pre-concert discussion, “Amadeus in Retrospect: The Music, Health and Legacy of Mozart,” with Mozart expert Vincent de Luise at 2 pm. Admission to the lecture is free with a concert ticket.

Dr de Luise will discuss the musical environment in which Mozart grew up, present a brief overview of his life in music, and discuss the fascinating issues surrounding his health, illness, and death. Dr de Luise, an ophthalmic surgeon in Waterbury, has held a lifelong interest in Mozart. Dr de Luise lectures and writes frequently on music and the arts.

Concert tickets are $40 for preferred seating and $25 for reserved seating. A student ticket is available for $5.

Tickets may be purchased online at WaterburySymphony.org, by calling the WSO Office at 203-574-4283, or at the box office on the afternoon of the concert.
