Lyddy Lobbies Rell To Preserve LPN Program
State Representative Chris Lyddy has called on Governor M. Jodi Rell to reinstate the funding for the ten licensed practical nurse (LPN) program offered at the stateâs technical schools.
âDuring these difficult economic times, we canât afford to jeopardize jobs or public health. This is a cut that sacrifices both, and I urge Governor Rell to rethink her decision and to reinstate this program immediately,â Rep Lyddy stated in a release received by The Bee January 13.
The governor suspended the funding for LPN programs for two years in her most recent round of rescissions; a cut that does not need legislative approval.
The 18-month LPN program at a state technical school costs a student about $5,000. Attending a private licensed practical nurse education program would cost a student about seven times as much, a price that many of the students would be unable to afford, Rep Lyddy contended.
The current programs produce more than 300 nurses every 16 months.
Rep Lyddy added, âResidents have contacted me about the importance of the LPN program and the need to preserve it. Rather than make an irresponsible cut to this program, the governor should be doing more to streamline state agencies.â
According to the state Department of Labor, there are more than 300 openings for licensed vocational and practical nurses each year and often offer an average annual salary exceeding $50,000.
