SNAPSHOT: CHRISTINE WIEMELS
Occupation: I am a registered nurse. I work as a volunteer with Regional
Hospice, and also as a school nurse at St Rose School once or twice a month.
How Long in Newtown: I have lived here for nine years. Newtown is the longest
I've lived anywhere in my married life. We have made 12 corporate moves. I
have lived here twice, from 1981 to 1986, then we were transferred to Geneva,
Switzerland, then to Cleveland, Ohio, and Clarksville, Tenn., and we moved
back here in 1995. I am from Ohio originally.
Biggest Change Seen in Town: There have been big changes from when I lived
here in the mid-80s to the mid-90s. One of them is the availability of nice
housing. It's interesting to watch how Sandy Hook grew up. The roads look a
lot nicer now. They're wider and safer. Also, the center, with shopping, is a
plus.
Family: My husband, Bill, and I have been married for 30 years. He is retired
from UCar International, which was at one time affiliated with Union Carbide.
We have three children. Tim, 29, an engineer, and his wife, Annette, have two
children, Brad, 4, and Drew, 2. Gretchen, 28, is engaged. She is a law student
at Western New England in Springfield. Bridget, 21, graduated from the
University of Rhode Island with a degree in journalism.
Pets: We have one dog, a cocker spaniel named Kristy.
Hobbies: I enjoy golfing, hiking, travel, reading, and playing the piano.
Favorite Books and Authors: I love to read, particularly mysteries. Among my
favorite authors are Dick Francis and Mary Higgins Clark.
Favorite TV Show: Law & Order.
Organizations: I am vice president of the Newtown Visiting Nurse Association.
I run the pre-school eye screening. I volunteer at Dorothy Day with the St
Rose Social Concerns. I am a member of the Ridgewood Country Club.
Most Vivid Memory Of Newtown: The parade. It is a throwback to a time that
doesn't seem to exist anymore, but it does. It's a renewal, with the schools
and all the people coming out for it. Over time, it continues to roll. It's
uniquely Newtown. Newtown's $2 movie is also uniquely Newtown.
Favorite Vacation Spot: The island of Hawaii. We've gone to the Mauna Lani
Hotel in Hawaii four or five times. We will be going again next winter with
all the children. They've gone with us before and are very anxious to go
again.
Personal Philosophy: To have a positive outlook on things and not to dwell on
the negative. Look for the good in people and situations.
