Two Youths Win Local Fire Prevention Poster Contest

The town fire marshal’s office has submitted two local schoolchildren’s fire prevention posters for consideration in the annual Connecticut Fire Prevention Poster Contest.

Deputy Fire Marshal Rich Frampton said that the two posters have been submitted for consideration in the Fairfield County poster competition. Winning posters from that competition will be submitted to be judged in a statewide competition.

The local entries in the county competition were created by Nathan Wutzke, 9, a fourth grader at Head O’ Meadow School, and by Emily Sippin, 10, a fifth grader at Reed Intermediate School, Mr Frampton said.

As local winners, each student will receive a $100 US Savings Bond.

The slogan employed in the competition is “Fire Prevention — Everyone/Everyday.”

Nathan’s poster used those terms, plus others, in urging the need for fire safety.

Emily’s poster depicted a firefighter using a fire hose to douse a blaze, as a fire dog watches.

Nathan and Emily were the local winners in the contest in their respective grade levels, Mr Frampton said.

The winners in the state poster competition will be announced in late March. Winners’ artwork will be published in a fire prevention calendar for 2009.

The art project’s goal is to make children and their families aware that fire prevention involves everyone being alert everyday to the causes of fires.
