Eggs On House
Police said this week they are investigating a case of vandalism in which someone on or about February 20 threw some eggs at a home on Edgewood Drive, causing more than $2,000 worth of damage to the premises in a case of first-degree criminal mischief.
Edgewood Drive extends westward from Schoolhouse Hill Road, near the Schoolhouse Hill Road overpass above Interstate 84. Police ask anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in that area to contact them at 426-5841.
DUI Charge
About 7:12 pm March 9, police responded to a report of a one-vehicle accident near 15 Washington Avenue in Sandy Hook Center.
Following an investigation, police said they charged the driver, Stacey Raino, 22, of 10 Bridle Path Trail with driving under the influence and with making a restricted turn. There were no injuries in the accident, police said.
After processing the case, police released Raino on $100 bail for a March 25 court appearance.
DUI Arrest
About 5:45 pm March 9, police received a report of a problem in the parking lot of the Newtown Pizza Palace at 65 Church Hill Road.
Police said that on arriving, they found unresponsive motorist Nicholas Kelly, 65, of Monroe inside a parked vehicle with its engine running.
After investigating, police charged Kelly with driving under the influence and with unsafe backing.
After he posted $100 bail, police released Kelly from custody for a March 25 court appearance.
Trash Fire
About 3:21 am March 4, two police were dispatched to a dumpster fire near 46 Mt Pleasant Road, according to a police report.
On arriving, police spotted a garbage bin engulfed in flames, after which they put out the fire with their fire extinguishers, police said. Hook & Ladder firefighters also went to the scene.
Following an investigation, police charged a youth under age 16 in connection with the fire. Police charged the unidentified youth with second-degree breach of peace and with third-degree criminal mischief.
The youth is scheduled to appear in Danbury Juvenile Court on March 17. State law shields the identities of people under age 18 who are charged with criminal offenses.
Diner Incident
About 2:30 am March 8, police were called to the Blue Colony Diner at 66 Church Hill Road to stop a fight that was in progress.
Police said that after arriving, they learned that George D. Burch, 21, of 41 Engleside Terrace had caused a problem inside the diner and then went outdoors and struck a female in the face, injuring her. Ambulance volunteers treated the woman at the scene for an injury, police said.
Police said they charged Burch with third-degree assault, breach of peace, and possession of less than four ounces of marijuana.
After arrest processing, Burch was released from custody on a written promise to appear in court on March 25, police report.
Drug Charges
About 5:15 am on March 9, police received a report that someone had rung a residentâs doorbell in the Poverty Hollow Road area.
Police said they went to Equestrian Ridge Road in that area and found motorist Samuel Wolff, 18, of Bethel with three passengers inside the vehicle that he was driving.
Police charged Wolff with possession of less than four ounces of marijuana. Police released him on a written promise to appear in court on March 25.
Additionally, police said they arrested two of the three passengers in the vehicle on drug charges. Because those two youths are under age 18, police did not disclose their identities. The two youths were released for March 28 court appearances.
Truck Crash
About 7:32 pm March 8, Brian Gibbons, 25, of 55 Cedar Hill Road was driving a 1995 Ford F-350 southward on Brushy Hill Road, police said. The truck had a road sander in its bed and a snowplow affixed to its front end, police said.
The front end of the truck then collided with a utility pole at the northern intersection of Brushy Hill Road and John Beach Road, shattering the pole and causing its wires to hang low over the road, police said.
Ambulance volunteers transported Gibbons to Danbury Hospital to be checked for injuries, police said. Gibbons was treated at the hospital and released, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Hook & Ladder firefighters responded to the accident. The area where the accident occurred was closed to traffic for about 16 hours as utility crews made repairs, police said. The accident is under investigation.
Storm Accident
Police report a weather-related motor vehicle accident near the intersection of Birch Hill Road and Scudder Road about 8 pm March 8.
Motorist Matthew Schmitt, 21, of 118 Taunton Hill Road, who was driving a 2001 BMW 330-ci coupe on Birch Hill Road, encountered severe crosswinds during a rainstorm, after which a tree fell onto the auto, causing it to go out of control and strike a utility pole, police said. Firefighters went to the accident.
Ambulance volunteers transported Schmitt to Danbury Hospital, police said. Schmitt was treated at the hospital and released, a hospital spokeswoman said. Police took no enforcement.
The area where the accident occurred was closed to traffic while repairs were made.
Queen Street
Police report a two-car accident at the intersection of Queen Street and Glover Avenue about 6:55 pm March 7.
The collision involved motorist Jonathan Waldstein, 17, of Monroe, who was driving a 2004 Toyota Camry, and motorist Thomas Toothill, 48, of New Milford, who was driving a 2002 Subaru Impreza, police said. There were no injuries. Police issued Waldstein a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.
I-84 Collision
A minivan and a tractor-trailer truck collided on eastbound Interstate 84, west of Exit 11, about 11:12 pm March 5, state police said.
Motorist Ryan Walsh, 31, of Southington was driving a 2000 Plymouth Voyager minivan that was carrying three passengers in the center lane of three lanes, state police said.
The minivan then moved into the right lane, striking a 2000 Peterbilt tractor-trailer truck being driven in that lane by Glenn Edens, 37, of Columbia, Ky., state police said.
There were no injuries. State police said Walsh made an improper lane change.
Poverty Hollow Road
Motorist Emily Siciliano, 24, of Redding was driving a 1994 Volvo 850 station wagon westward on Poverty Hollow Road, near its intersection with Wentworth Drive, about 6:22 pm March 10, when the auto crossed into the opposite lane and then struck a tree off the left road shoulder, police said.
Police said the accident occurred due to a known medical condition. Ambulance volunteers went to the scene, but did not make a patient transport, police said. Dodgingtown firefighters went to the accident.
Police said they charged Siciliano with reckless driving and with making a restricted turn.
Drug Charges
Police report that after spotting motorist Melissa Nolan, 31, of Shelton driving on northern Queen Street with a defective tail lamp on the afternoon of March 11, they stopped her to investigate.
Police said they had their German shepherd sniff the vehicle and it indicated that drugs were present within. A search of the vehicle turned up some marijuana and drug paraphernalia, police said.
Nolan was charged with possession of less than four ounces of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and with an automotive equipment violation, police said.
Police said they released Nolan on $100 bail for a March 27 court appearance.
Vandalism
Sometime between 6 pm on March 4 and 9 am on March 5, someone vandalized the Amaral Motors property at 40 South Main Street, committing second-degree criminal mischief. Police ask anyone with information on the crime to contact Officer Todd Dingee at 426-5841.
Flagpole Intersection
Police report a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Church Hill Road and Main Street about 6:45 pm March 6.
Motorist Gladys Martone, 67, of Westport, who was driving a 2005 Mercedes-Benz C-320 sedan, was waiting at a stop sign on westbound Church Hill Road in preparing to make a left turn onto southbound Main Street, police said.
At that time, motorist Gary Traister, 68, of Bethel was driving a 2002 Subaru Forester station wagon southward on Main Street, police said.
As the Mercedes attempted to make the left turn, it collided with the Subaru, police said. There were no injuries. Police issued Martone a written warning for failure to grant the right of way at a stop sign.
Three Vehicles
A three-vehicle collision occurred on northbound South Main Street at its intersection with Mile Hill Road about 4:30 pm March 11.
Northbound motorist Lizabeth Cyr, 31, of 21 Appleblossom Lane, who was driving a 1993 Chevrolet Caprice sedan, stopped for a red traffic signal, after which northbound motorist Mary Fredericks, 86, of Brookfield, who was driving a 2002 Subaru Impreza station wagon, stopped behind the Chevrolet, police said.
Northbound motorist Sandra Blum, 60, of Middlebury, who was driving a 2006 Jeep Liberty, then struck the Subaru from behind, pushing the Subaru into the rear end of the Chevrolet, police said.
Ambulance volunteers went to the accident, but made no patient transport, police said. Police said they issued Blum an infraction for following too closely.
