Head O’ Meadow third and fourth grade students and their family members participated in an evening event that highlighted STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) activities on Thursday, February 5.

The STEM night was a joint effort between the school, the Head O’ Meadow PTA, and the EverWonder Children’s Museum, which had staff members and volunteers attend the event.

For the event, activities were set up at stations throughout Head O’ Meadow’s cafetorium. Students and their family members took turns at the stations. Activities included creating aluminum boats, crafting trees out of newspaper, and a station where students could use a microscope to inspect different objects, like a piece of snakeskin or a dragonfly.

Smart Boards were also set up for students to interact with math games, through the Stepping Stones math program.

“We’re very excited to have the opportunity to partner with EverWonder Children’s Museum,” said Head O’ Meadow math/science specialist Gail Maletz.

EverWonder Children’s Museum Executive Director Tamara Barry and Ms Maletz both spoke to introduce the event to assembled event attendees.

Ms Barry announced some news for the museum when she spoke. Thanks to a $40,000 challenge grant from the Jeniam Foundation and the museum’s board of directors, the $80,000 needed to reopen the museum’s doors was reached. According to a release from the museum, along with the Jeniam Foundation’s $25,000, and the museum board’s $15,000 in matching funds, more than 200 individuals and organization donations offered $25,000, including a recent $7,000 donation from Danbury’s Praxair. With the funds, EverWonder is working toward reopening the museum in late March at 31 Pecks Lane.

Ms Maletz said the STEM Night marked Head O’ Meadow’s first evening event that offered STEM activities.
