Fifth Graders Claim Tourney Title

The Newtown fifth grade boys’ basketball team captured the 22nd Annual Charlie Rome Tournament championship in East Haven this past weekend.

Newtown used solid defense and transition offense to win early-round games against Wallingford and Cheshire by final scores of 46-10 and 39-33.

In the championship game, against Guilford, Newtown jumped out to an early 13-7 lead at the end of the first half and never trailed the rest of the way, en route to a 36-22 triumph. Robert Disibio, Dan Mason, and Luke Barrett led Newtown on a 17-9 run late in the game to finish off the win. Solid contributions were also received from Griffin Cross, Jimmy Davies, James Doyle, Luke Melillo, Aidan Moulder, Todd Petersen, and Bryan Vander Have. With the win, Newtown closed out its season with an overall record of 23-6.
