*YA Book Talk: Let’s talk about The Sea of Trolls by Nancy Farmer on Wednesday, May 9, from 4 to 5 pm, in the Story Room.

To free his younger sister from a shape-shifting troll, Jack takes a journey with Viking berserkers, encountering a variety of both dangerous and helpful mythological creatures along the way.

Readers in grades 5 and up please join us. Sign up at the Main Floor Circulation Desk, call 426-4533, or just drop in.

Adult Programs

*Program Cancellation: The screening of the independent film Monster Thursday originally scheduled for Tuesday, April 17, has been cancelled.

The film can be borrowed from the library, however. Please ask at the Second Floor Circulation Desk.

*Evening Book Discussion Group:  On Thurs, April 19, at 7:30 pm, the Evening Book Discussion Group will discuss The History of Love.

This novel by Nicole Krauss spans over 60 years and takes readers from Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe to present day Brighton Beach. At the center of each main character’s psyche is the issue of loneliness, and the need to fill a void left empty by lost love. Leo Gursky is a retired locksmith spending the last stage of his life terrified that no one will notice when he dies. Fourteen-year old Alma Singer vacillates between wanting to memorialize her dead father and finding a way to lift her mother’s veil of depression.

As the connection between Leo and Alma is slowly unmasked, the desperation, along with the potential for salvation, of this unique pair is also revealed.

*Tertulia Literaria: The Spanish Language Book Group, called Tertulia Literaria, will have its next meeting on Thursday, April 19, in the old board room.

This book club (not a class) is led by Laura Humphries Ross. The April book discussion – in Spanish, so fluency is a must – will cover La vida breve by Juan Carlos Onetti. Please join us.

*NewtownREADS 2007: One book, one community… Everyone in Newtown is being encouraged to read and then discuss or take part in any of the activities that have been planned around To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

Remaining related programs include the following: April 24, book discussion with Joanne Rochman, at CH Booth Library, 7:30 pm; April 26, Author Talk and book signing with Charles Shields, the author of Mockingbird: Portrait of Harper Lee, at Newtown High School, 7:30 pm; and April 28,  Mock Trial/Theatrical Performance, directed by Doug MacHugh, 2 pm (tickets $5) and 7 pm ($10), at Newtown Meeting House.

Charles Shields spent four years doing extensive research for his book, which includes correspondence with over 600 of Ms Lee’s friends, neighbors and colleagues. The fascinating book offers a glimpse into the life of one of America’s most acclaimed writers. Copies of the book will be available ($20) for purchase, and Mr Shields will sign copies following the lecture.

*Would You Sign The Declaration of Independence?

On Tuesday, April 24, at 7 pm, The Danbury area branch of The Sons of the American Revolution will hold a discussion and debate on the Declaration of Independence. The proposition for discussion will be “Knowing the Implications, Would You Sign the Declaration of Independence Today?”

The public is invited.

*Book Nook Notes: April is National Humor month (seriously…) and The Book Nook is celebrating with a cartload of books guaranteed to tickle your funny bone. Come find something to make you laugh!

C.H. Booth Library, at 25 Main Street, can be reached by calling 426-4533.
