A New Venue For

Parade Viewing And Reviewing

By Steve Bigham

Organizers are suggesting that people consider changing their seats for Monday’s Labor Day Parade, especially for those who usually sit along Queen Street near the reviewing stand. This year, it appears, much of the action will take place at the intersection of Main Street and Glover Avenue.

That’s where the reviewing stand will sit, instead of its usual location in front of My Place Restaurant. It’s also the best spot to be to see the raising of the world’s largest American flag, which will take place in that area with the use of a crane. The 90 by 45-foot flag will be hoisted up moments after the head of the parade makes its way down Main Street.

“I think the highlight of the parade this year will be the flag,” noted co-chairman Kym Stendahl.

Main Street also promises to be the place to be during a brief ceremony prior to the start of the parade. At 9 am, three giant flags will be unfurled from the flagpole heading south. The flags (two of them commemorating World War II) will be held above Main Street waist-high by volunteers.

This pre-parade ceremony is expected to cause additional traffic congestion so parade-goers are urged to plan accordingly.

Mrs Stendahl said that plans could change at the last minute since the flags are a new feature at the parade.

“This all could change if there are 11th hour changes,” she said.
