Sandy Hook Crash

Two Chevrolets collided at the intersection of Pole Bridge Road and Route 34 at about 7:20 am June 16, police report.

The accident involved motorist Paul Tani, 33, of 45 Philo Curtis Road, who was driving a 1994 Astrovan, and motorist Donna Witkowski, 42, of 1 Crown View Drive, who was driving a 1991 Cavalier, police said.

The Astrovan was attempting to turn left from the end of Pole Bridge Road onto eastbound Route 34 and its driver thought that the Cavalier, which was westbound on Route 34, had stopped to let the Astrovan turn, police said. The two vehicles then collided.

There were no injuries. Police issued Tani a written warning for a stop sign violation.

Marijuana

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, John Straniti III, 33, of 1 Partridge Lane, turned himself over to police on June 21 and was charged with possession of marijuana and with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police said the charges stem from a May 8 incident at 100 Church Hill Road in Sandy Hook Center. Police released Straniti on a promise to appear July 1 in Danbury Superior Court.

Vendor

Newtown police said that after learning that Christopher J. McDaniel, 27, of Baton Rouge, La., was being held in custody by the Madison Police Department, they went to Madison on the night of June 21 and charged McDaniel on a warrant with failure to respond to a violation and with vending without a permit. The original charge stems from a 2002 incident, police said.

Police released McDaniel on $100 bail for a July 8 court appearance.

Threatening

Police report that after receiving a complaint from a female victim, they investigated and charged Kimberly Miller, 18, of 21 Indian Hill Road on June 22 with threatening and with breach of peace.

Police said the charges stem from threats allegedly made by Miller during a telephone conversation. Police released Miller on a promise to appear July 7 in Danbury Superior Court.

Liquor Store Break

Police report that they charged two 14-year-old boys each with third-degree burglary, sixth-degree larceny, and criminal mischief following an incident early on the morning of June 23.

Police said that while on patrol at about 12:30 am, they saw the two youths running away from Church Hill Wines and Spirits at 20 Church Hill Road. Police said the window of the store had been broken with a rock and the two youths had stolen a 12-pack of beer from the premises. The burglary charge is a felony.

Because the youths are under age 16, their identities are shielded by state law. Both youths were released on promises to appear July 12 in Danbury Juvenile Court, police said.

DUI Charge

At about 11 pm on June 23, police spotted a 1997 Dodge Caravan minivan drive through a red traffic signal at the intersection of Wasserman Way and South Main Street, so they stopped the driver to investigate.

Police said they stopped motorist Michael Peterson, 23, of Bethel on South Main Street and performed field sobriety tests, which he failed. Police said they charged Peterson with driving under the influence and with failure to obey a traffic control signal.

After processing the arrest, police released Peterson on $50 bail for a July 7 court appearance.
