JAMALI NYC PRESENTS ‘DAY’ FRESCO TEMPERA PAINTINGS

ak/gs set 8/24 #710215

NEW YORK CITY — Jamali NYC Gallery presents “Day,” an exhibition of seven large-scale mystical frescoes inspired by the creation of the universe, on view September 13–November 11.

This collection of Jamali’s fresco tempera paintings, created from 2002 to 2003, offers dynamic and subtle parallels to the Judeo/Christian/Islamic story of creation. Each highly textured fresco echoes the surface of the earth, referencing familiar components such as the rich brown soil of the ground, the cool blue hues of the oceans and the fiery reds of volcanic activity.

Each painting in “Day” was created outdoors over an extended period time. To create his complex surface, Jamali danced on each canvas and artfully applied gold, silver, copper and organic pigments with his feet.

Art critic Donald Kuspit explains Jamali’s copious use of material in Jamali: Mystical Expressionism–Dreams and Works (Rizzoli International, 2003). “Perhaps the most striking feature of Jamali’s painting is their vivid texture. It is evocative of primordial process, more so than any other surface in modern painting.”

Jamali Gallery is at 413 West Broadway. For information, www.jamali.com or 212-966-3335.
