OâByrne Sworn In As President Of NHE
Newtown Housing for the Elderly, Inc (NHE) held its annual dinner meeting the end of January and elected new members to the board and officers of the board of directors. John OâByrne was reelected as president of the board of directors.
Also elected to office were Linda Manganaro, vice president; Gene Luchansky, secretary; and Brian Amey, treasurer. Newly elected to the board were Carol Mattagat, Brian Amey, and Jeanne Honan, who replaced Mike Neiman, George Mattegat, and Jessie Ceccarelli.
Guest speaker John Reed, a member of Fairfield Hills Authority, offered a detailed explanation of some of the plans for the area with the help of a large map showing all the buildings in the complex.
Members of the board of directors are all volunteers, devoting many hours to managing the housing complex known as Nunnawauk Meadows. Last year at this time, the new 14 apartments of the sixth expansion of the project were just finished but occupancy was not yet started.
Separate rooms for a library, beauty salon, doctorâs examination room, and an arts and crafts room were completed but not furnished.
This year, however, all the apartments are occupied, the library is well stocked, and the three other rooms have been appropriately furnished for their use.
NHE is a privately owned, nonprofit, self managed corporation composed of nine directors. The daily management and upkeep of the facility is handled by Executive Director Frank DeLucia and his staff.
With the 14 new apartments built around the Nunnawauk Meadows Community Center, residents will be able to take part in the various programs in the community building without leaving the premises. Currently, a hot meal is provided daily at noon, and numerous social activities are conducted on a daily basis.
There are 134 housing apartments, built on 30 of the total 63 acres owned by NHE. This allows the complex to spread out with much open space and walkways, resembling a park.
Nunnawauk Meadows, which is owned and run by NHE, provides housing at a reasonable cost for those seniors of lower income who might otherwise not be able to continue living independently in pleasant, safe, and enjoyable surroundings.
