The 2002 fall sports season at Newtown High School was one for the ages – more than 100 wins, three South-West Conference team championships, a CIAC Class L individual championship, and four school records.

Wow.

So it would be pretty foolish to expect the same sort of success in 2003 – except, well, while some teams have lost key members and have taken a step or two backwards, other teams have improved quite a bit. And since no one expected what happened in 2002 to happen, who knows what will happen in 2003?

That’s the beauty of sports.

BOYS SOCCER

Coach – Brian Neumeyer

21-1-0, SWC champions

If there is one team that is going to be hard-pressed to repeat the successes of a year ago, it is the Newtown High School boys’ soccer team.

But that is mostly because the ‘Hawks set the bar so high – goodness, a nationally-ranked powerhouse that won 21 games in a row, easily capturing a South-West Conference championship and going all the way to the CIAC Class LL state championship game before finally being vanquished.

That is a high, high bar.

And the ‘Hawks return to the field in 2003 without Mike Troy (47-8-55), Ryan Tracy (12-8-20) and Jake Rouse (3-7-10) – which is 60% of the goals and 46% of the total offense generated by one of the most dominating teams in school history.

“There is no way we can make that up,” said head coach Brian Neumeyer. “Those games where we won by five or six goals are going to be a lot closer. But we’re optimistic. If they continue to work hard, they have the potential to develop into a very good team.”

Although coach Neumeyer will hope to create an offense that will look to all corners of the field, junior Marcus Tracy (27-17-44) is, without question, the most dynamic player on the field. A midfielder/forward, Tracy has the explosiveness to score at any moment.

“But he can’t do it all himself,” said coach Neumeyer. “Last year Marcus had Troy and Troy had Marcus, which made both of them successful. This year we don’t have a lot of experience coming back.”

Coach Neumeyer expects some solid play from senior goaltender Andrew Fiscella and seniors Ryan Keogler (0-10-10) and Matt McFadden (8-6-14). And then there is a full complement of juniors, including Brian Miles (4-6-10), Justin Bass, Ryan Davies, Ryan Domingos, Adam Drummond, Nick Mentessana (1-1-2), Mike Nastri, Kevin Quinn, Ben Trigal and Rodrigo DeSouza. Sophomores include Marc Doherty (4-4-8), Chris Hoagland, Noah Kugielsky, Alex Meisel, Louis Ritzinger and Matt Taylor. And the incoming freshmen are Brian Conroy, Justin Miller and Michael Vontobel.

“Last year we were expected to win and we did very well,” said coach Neumeyer. “This year … we don’t want to let the program down.”

VOLLEYBALL

Coach – Tom Czaplinski

18-5-0, SWC Champions

A lot of new faces, a lot of new rules.

The Newtown High School volleyball team returns from a remarkable South-West Conference championship season having graduated eight seniors and facing the prospect of playing with a bunch of new rules.

It’s a different world, all right.

The Lady Nighthawks bid farewell to such standout players as Caitlyn Elf, Jenn Murphy, Brittany Hutchison, Jess Phillips, Stacey Raino. And, so, how does a team recover from losses like that and still hold out hopes of competing for another championship?

Well, return one of the best players in the state … Stephanie Logan.

Logan was an amazing force at the net and behind the service line and is a HUGE plus for the ‘Hawks. Add to that the return of junior setter Lisa Morgan and the ‘Hawks certainly have the core of a team that can compete.

“We have four returning varsity players and plenty of new faces,” said coach Czaplinski. “But even with all the new faces, this will be by no means a rebuilding year. We definitely expect to compete with the rest of the league but also realize it will take some time to get used to everyone and all the new rules.”

Ah, yes, the new rules.

Games will now be played with ‘rally’ scoring – which means teams can score points even if they are not serving the ball. Also, any serve that strikes the net but manages to go over will be considered a good serve and in play.

The rules will certainly eliminate those long, drawn-out matches and will lend a new, non-stop excitement to the game.

If the ‘Hawks can get used to the new rules – and to each other – then another exciting fall season is possible.

Logan will captain the team and is one of only two seniors on the team (Alia Kemsley is the other). Juniors include Courtney Brunton, Lindsay Chimileski, Sarah Holroyd, Natasha Kormanik, Morgan and Paula Wickman. Sophomores include Diana Grimaldi, Becky Huot, Miranda Rucinski and Jenna Van Waalwijk.

FOOTBALL

Coach – Ken Roberts

5-5-0

It starts here.

Newtown High School football coach Ken Roberts will be the first to admit that the Nighthawks are not going to shake the foundations of the South-West Conference this year, but anyone who stops down to see the ‘Hawks this fall will get a glimpse of how good the team could be next year and the year after that.

“This will be a very good team in the future,” said coach Roberts.

The ‘Hawks – five up and five down a year ago – come back as an entirely re-shaped football team. This is no longer a vertical spread offense with the three-step drops and the deep passes, but an option offense that will be propelled by an immense offensive line and a variety of different personnel out of the backfield.

“Up front, we are very solid,” said coach Roberts. “We have been getting better with every practice and every scrimmage, but we’re not there yet. There is still a lot of work to do in a lot of areas. But the kids have a great attitude and they refuse to quit.”

The ‘Hawks lost some key members out of their 2002 backfield – quarterback Tom Ryan (80-of-165 for 1,022 yards and 14 TDs) and running backs Austin Bowes (42-for-200, 1 TD) and Kyle Nowak (51-for-164, 4 TDs), which will put the onus on returning backs Kyle Kirch (63-for-333, 2 TDs), Bob Pattison (64-for-291, 2 TDs) and Ben Bagaglio (65-for-279, 3 TDs) and new quarterbacks John Collins and Marc Ingerman (who will split time at the position).

“The only thing not where it should be is the offense,” said coach Roberts. “We’re making the kinds of mistakes that young teams make.”

But the ‘Hawks are much improved on special teams and on defense (thanks to the work of guys like Ross Coates, Andrew Lambo, Colin Curran and Dan Cascone). And the senior leadership provided by senior captains Bagaglio, Coates, Curran and Matt Wheeler has been more than coach Roberts could have hoped for.

The senior contingent includes Joe Defeo (who has been sidelined with an injury), Brett Eastman, Kyle Hastedt, Lambo Rob Liu, Chris Marsden, Andrew Rudolph, and TJ Sequenzia. Juniors are Paul Altieri, Jeff Bell, Cascone, Dan Kearns, Jeff Levasseur, Ian Murray, Brendan O’Connor, Skye Perry, Brian Poeltl, Josh Rouse, Taylor Schmidt, Adam Seferi and Brendon Thomas.

And a large group of sophomores includes Aadil Ansari, Billy Beatty, Matt Berquist, Joe Brewer, Anthony Carlisle, Andrew Chimileski, James Dahlgard, Steve Kean, Colin O’Connor, Carey Olsen, George Schork, Dan Scheiloh, Roy Scheunemann, Thomas Sharpe, Kevin Silber, Grant Speer, Josh Tenenbaum, Dave Villareal and James Wiedemann.

“This is a great group of kids,” said coach Roberts. “The pre-season has been very enjoyable.”

And it could only get better with better attitudes, new uniforms, new practice fields, a new scheme and a bunch of talented freshmen and sophomores who will make the Nighthawks a team to watch for some time to come.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Coach – Marsha Caine

15-2-0, SWC champions

It is a testament, perhaps, to the great depth and determination of the team that the Newtown High School girls’ cross country team captured a South-West Conference championship in 2002 without one runner finishing in the top five.

Amazing.

And while the ‘Hawks lost a fair portion of that core to graduation (Sarah MacKnight, Christine Manfredonia and Megan Ignatius) they do return the top three runners from a year ago (Carolyn Brennan, Caitlyn Weber and Laura Reid) and bolster that with the addition of a sophomore (Sadie Ball) who qualified in the mile last spring in the CIAC Class L track meet.

“Our top runners have returned in good shape,” said head coach Marsha Caine, “and we have 26 girls out for the team – our largest turnout yet. We hope to qualify for the State Opens as a team and that is what we are training for.”

The ‘Hawks will find leadership in seniors Kelly Bailey, Brennan, Amy Busko, Kelly Collier, Kate Fenton, Reid and Weber. Juniors include Leah Herity, Heather Snow, Caitlin Thursland, and Jenna Zigman. Sophomores include Ball, Karli Beitel, Sophie Cerreta, Elizabeth Ericson, Emelye Neff, Kaitlyn Sullivan, Carolyn Tevnan and Stephanie Winkler. And the freshmen include Michelle Brennan, Moira Collier, Jessica DiVanno, Kelly McPhee, Ellan Reid and Shannon Tredennick.

GIRLS SOCCER

Coach – Rupert de los Reyes

14-5-3

There seems to be an endless supply of talented young players who keep filtering into the Newtown High School girls’ soccer program. And with a new influx (led by freshman Kristi Nowak) bolstering a team that is almost entirely intact from its 14-win season of a year ago, this could turn into a very, very good fall for the Lady Nighthawks.

“There is a tremendous amount of talent out there,” said head coach Rupert de los Reyes, who saw his girls open the 2003 season with a 2-1 win over arch-rival Lauralton Hall on Tuesday, “but we also lost some talent.”

Oh, yeah … outstanding defensive back Kelley Haines and midfielder Alex Helfer (3-5-8) were unable to return to the team this fall and seniors Allison Frobey (near legendary for that exceptionally long throw-in of hers), goaltender Allison Smith and Caroline Kunkel (a fiery competitor with guts and heart) graduated.

The ‘Hawks will miss them, for sure, and coach de los Reyes will have to find someone who can fill those big shoes.

On the subject of the two captains, Chelsea Morin (13-4-17, All State) is probably the top scoring threat on the team, but often attracts a lot of defensive attention. Mary Anders (5-9-14) has got a powerful leg, but will often move back to help bolster the defense.

But that is not all.

Casey Frobey (9-4-13) is a serious threat on the wing and the speedy Alex Konneker (2-3-5) can blow past a defender in the blink of an eye. April Scheuerell (5-7-12) is a tireless worker while Tara Gaston (3-1-4), Kate Stickles (1-3-4), Becky Corrigan (2-2-4), Maggie DeMarco (1-1-2) and Stacy Shpunt (0-1-1) all have the ability to put the ball in the net.

And on top of all that, Carrie Lipnick returns after a year in Fairfield, Rachel Vontobel returns after a season recuperating from a torn ACL, and Kristin Davis returns after an injury-plagued season to boost the Newtown offense.

Brittany Meier, Emily Fields, Kelly Corrigan, Mary Ober – these are just three more in a long list of players who are displaying a lot of toughness and ability.

“This is an awesome group of kids,” said coach de los Reyes. “And our captains – Mary (Anders) is a tremendous leader and Chelsea (Morin) was the No. 2 player in the SWC. This is a real talented group of players here.”

Yes – it could be a very, very good fall.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Coach – Rich Pesce

11-3-0

Balance and depth – those are the things that could carry the Newtown High School boys’ cross country team back into the top three of the South-West Conference (with a chance – who knows? – to be number one).

“This is the biggest turnout we have had in at least seven to eight years,” said head coach Rich Pesce. “It is certainly the largest freshman group that I can remember. There is a great deal of enthusiasm and competitiveness across the board.”

Senior tri-captains Doug Bonjour, Tyler Hull and Phil Zencey figure to provide the core of the team, but coach Pesce also has his eyes on juniors Ryan Kraft, Jay Schunter, Pete Dittmar and Christian DeRoo, a transfer student from Pennsylvania.

Returning sophomores include Alister Ratcliff, Jake Sullivan, and Matt Cole. Of the large freshman group, Charlie Baldour has experience from area road races and could find himself part of the varsity seven more sooner than later.

“We are aiming to be one of the top three teams in the mix for an SWC title,” said coach Pesce, “with New Milford as probably the favorite. Wherever we end up will be based on how well we continue to improve from day to day and meet to meet.”

Other runners expected to make a contribution include juniors Bryan Fogelstrom, Jon Larsen and Nick Varga, sophomore newcomer Jeff Lipnick, and freshmen Kevin Donahue, Greg Hill, Seth Hull, Anthony Klabonski, Nick Leuzzi, Eric MacKnight, Ryan Morrissey, Sean O’Connell, Scott Nichols and Bobby Schwarz.

FIELD HOCKEY

Coach – Kathy Davey

8-8-1

It seems like every year – every single year, darn it – the Newtown High School field hockey team is losing a ton of good players to graduation.

But somehow coach Kathy Davey mixes all of her new players into a competitive team. Last year, the Lady Nighthawks returned to field after losing 14 seniors to graduation and managed a fine 8-8-1 campaign.

Coach Davey is going to have to work the same kind of magic this year, though, because the ‘Hawks lost their four outstanding captains – Kelly Rodden (0-1-1), Elana Tenenbaum (1-0-1), Katie Lahey (6-1-7) and All-State player Kristen McGrath (1-4-5) – as well as Dana Martenson (4-2-6), Rachel Berliner (2-0-2) and Robin Pacheco (1-1-2).

“This is definitely a rebuilding year,” said coach Davey. “We’re young, but the kids are working really hard.”

The ‘Hawks are fortunate to return their second-leading scorer from a year ago, Amanda Hadgraft (5-1-6), who will captain the team. Kristen Troy (2-0-2) and Megan Regnery (0-2-2) also return to try and spark the offense.

Coach Davey will also look to seniors Allison Russo, Collette Naglieri and Amanda Lockwood for some leadership and expects some nice things from Cat Williams, starting back Allie Hornack, surprise sophomore Erin Clark, Amanda Shevlin, Lindsey Coyle and starting goaltender Jenny Urfer.

Other members of the team include Jessica Biscoe, Jessica Gaddis, Maggie Boushell, Kim Racow, Katie Fullman, Jackie Ercole, Amber Finlayson, Lisa Alberico, Lauren Babbage, Jackie Darigo, Amanda Black, Erica Ruiz, Kim Solheim, Katie Winkler, Corey Stokes, Shawna Smith, Katie VanVeen, Tori Marlin, Alana Weinick, Kerri Canavan, Alexa Feldman, Lauren Howell, and Alissa Gross.

SWIMMING

Coach – Mary Atkinson

9-3-0

The Newtown High School girls’ swim team lost just three dual meets last year – but a couple of those were real close. And the Nighthawks feel they have the team in 2003 to get those ones and make a run at the South-West Conference championship.

“We have a very strong team this year,” said head coach Mary Atkinson, whose team opened the season with a convincing win over Joel Barlow on Tuesday. “We have quite a few returning swimmers and many of those qualified for the CIAC state meet. We’re hoping our depth will enable us to beat a few teams that beat us last year.”

The returning CIAC qualifiers include Margaret Randall, Amy Robinson, Abby Atkinson (who set a school record at 1:10.64 in the 100-yard breaststroke), Jenny Cupero, Liz Gugino, Carol Ann Smith and diver Kim Mayers. Those who qualified for the SWC meet and return for 2003 include Kaitlyn Murphy, Caitlin O’Keefe, Lynn Cupero, Diana Bowen, Meghan O’Day, Kate Hoolehan, Megan Tredennick, Sarah Hemingway, Lauren Kotwicki, Liz O’Connell, Jessica Yakush, Jessica Remitz, Dana Taylor, Alex Hoolehan and divers Tierney Carey and Wendy Borst.

Boy, there is a lot of talent right there. But then coach Atkinson also gets to mix in freshmen Maricate Conlon, Sarah Harmonay, Maggie Hemingway, Jen Iassogna, Sally Tabler and Sarah Truckle.

That is a potent group.

About the only downside is the loss of All-State divers Kim Correa and Melissa Metzger, both of whom moved in the off-season.

The huge roster includes seniors Kelly Bailey, Chrissy Glander, and Floren Schertzer; juniors Britta Cedergren, Caitlin Dalton, Jackie Gutbrod, Tara Ryan, and Emily Tomasiewicz; sophomores Alex Isaacs, and Carol Ann Smith; and freshmen Nicole Borruso, Katie Sudbey, and Abby Radzmirski.

The team was good last year. Now it has a chance to be great.

CHEERLEADING

Coaches – Stacey D’Amico and Heather Bernhart

5th at SWCs, 1st at Nonnewaug and UCA New England

One of the downsides of starting a new season is working off all the rust that has accumulated in the off-season. But while the 2003 football season may be opening on Friday, the Newtown High School cheerleaders – who will be on the sidelines as always – have been working hard for months and will show no visible signs of rust.

The Lady Nighthawks (20 strong after spring tryouts) participated in the Southern Connecticut State University UCA Cheerleading Camp this summer and won first place in both the Cheer and Dance categories, second place in the Home Pom category, and tons of Superior ribbons. On top of all that, juniors Amber Butler, Amanda Klabonski and Mallory Berko were honored as All-Americans.

The long season begins this weekend and the ‘Hawks hope to approach the level of success they reached a year ago. While they mostly perform during the fall, the squad begins to truly compete during the winter and in 2002 the ‘Hawks finished first at the Nonnewaug High School competition, first at the UCA New England competition at the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, second at the SCSC competition, and fifth at the South-West Conference competition.

“They created large shoes for this squad to fill,” said coach Heather Bernhart. “We look forward to re-claiming our titles from last year and earning some new ones. The squad will be investing a lot of time into building solid stunts, funky dances and awesome tumbling.”

And the best part is – there are no seniors!

Members include juniors Christina Elsenhans, Lauren Grimaldi, Lisa Grossman, Stephanie Mackay, and Alyssa MacIntyre, sophomores Remy Ball, Noreen Barrett, Lauren Egdahl, Bria Innaurato, Kate Levasseur, Christina Matsis, Lauren Reagle and Melissa Shepard, and freshmen Nikki Beatty, Christina Bell, Lauren Nute and Jessica Shepard.
