JOSEPH KABE POST APRIL 6 AUCTION GENERAL WALKER ESTATE ak/lsb set 4/11

W/5 cuts requested; #735567

MILFORD, CONN. — Fine paintings and furniture from the historical General Walker estate of Stratford, Conn., found much interest at Joseph Kabe’s first auction of the year, on April 6. A standing-room-only crowd of about 250 bidders packed the gallery.

A ship’s portrait by Antonio Jacobsen realized $19,550 from a phone bidder from New York, who said he was buying it for his son as a present. Two fine portraits of English gentlemen sold to a couple from Maine for $2,700. A theatrical oil on board of a play, Nineteenth Century, did well and sold to a collector for $2,900. Other paintings of interest included a portrait of a lady, mid-Nineteenth Century, that went to a dealer on the phone for $1,450. A small watercolor of a country man shooting ducks created a stir and sold to a collector for $2,070. A Chagall lithograph sold for $920, and two Indian prints did well at $920.

Highlighting the furniture that came across the block was an early Hartford area linenfold chest in original condition. The front being carved with initials and chip carved decoration, it brought heated bidding and sold for $17,250. A Dutch inlaid desk, circa 1800, did well at $2,875, as did a North Shore two-drawer stand selling for $1,035.

Tiger maple was in demand, with a slant front desk going for $4,025, and a tiger maple drop leaf table realizing $1,265.

Other highlights included a fine Connecticut lowboy that sold for $6,600, a Connecticut highboy marriage going out at $6,325, a Queen Anne dining table, $1,265, and a heart and crown armchair (as is) for $690.

Also in the sale was a very small Chippendale chest that did well, selling for $4,887, a custom-made dining room table and chairs for $2,400, a two-drawer blanket chest $800, and an early barrel back chair at $1,495.

An antique 9-foot-by-12-foot Serapi in worn condition brought $7,750, a 4-foot-by-12-foot Sarouk, $690, a runner going out at $750 and many small rugs sold between $400 to $600 each.

A large Canton bowl sold on the phone to a collector for $4,600, a redware charger went to a dealer at $3,365, a Chinese Export vase (as is) brought $2,530 and a nice painted horse weathervane sold to the phone at $3,700.

All prices quoted include the buyer’s premium.
