Jean Maria Schmaling

Cherished Mother

And Grandmother

Jean Maria Schmaling, 85, of Danbury, died at Danbury Hospital, August 12. She was born July 2, 1926, in Norwalk, the daughter of Ruth (Simcoe) and Tom Holt.

She is survived by five children, including Kathleen Dardis of Sandy Hook; her dearest friend and caregiver, Paula Stevens of Danbury; a sister; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one brother.

Mrs Schmaling was a lab assistant at Boehringer-Ingelheim, retiring in 1991. She became known for her talent as a skilled artisan. She drew charcoal sketches, including caricatures, was a doll maker, and was a superb quilter. She also made clothing for all her children. She was also known to have a great sense of humor.

Funeral services took place August 16. A private committal service will be held at the Brookfield Congregational Church Memorial Garden.
