Local Offerings Attract Buyers To Cyr
(with 3 cuts)
By Rita Easton
GRAY, ME. -- The partial contents from homes in Winslow, Raymond, and Yarmouth
were offered in a 616-lot sale held by Cyr Auction Gallery. Approximately 200
were in attendance at the December 16 event, which grossed $86,000.
"There wasn't anything offered that was historically important," said Pam
Labonte of the gallery, "but there were a lot of local people who wanted to
buy from the local estates."
Members of the trade snapped up several of the highest-priced lots, including
a room-sized Oriental rug which brought $2,800; a mahogany shaped-top
Hepplewhite card table with inlay, which reached $2,300; and another
room-sized Oriental rug, which sold for $1,800.
One of the most charming pieces to cross the block was a Twentieth Century
Shreve, Crump, and Low inlaid grandmother clock, surmounted with three finials
and a fretwork crest, which realized $1,200. A weight-driven Waltham banjo
clock, with reverse painted scene of a house, the lot surmounted with an
eagle, made $1,650.
Two mahogany Federal chests sold at $1,150 each, one with white Sandwich pulls
and hairy paw feet; a collection of shaving mugs ranged from $35 to $250; an
oil on canvas by Joachim Franz Beich, depicting towering trees in the
foreground, sky and mountain in the background, with a winding path
integrating the scene, reached $700; a pastel by Horace Champagne garnered
$450; and a lot of clothing, comprising delicate, lacy, white period pieces,
garnered $275.
African art from the Dino D'Angelo collection of Chicago ranged from $175 to
$350. The pieces included a Dogon ancestor figure, a Fang dance mask, a Janus
mask, and a winged headdress mask of carved wood.
A large Canton Chinese Export platter reached $750; a pair of porcelain vases
brought $500; and a Staffordshire bowl and pitcher achieved $400.
A Samuel Aiken oil on canvas of cockfighting roosters was passed.
