Literacy Volunteers Needs Help
DANBURY â Literacy Volunteers of America-Danbury will hold an orientation meeting to provide an introduction to the programs, facilities, and volunteer opportunities on Wednesday, August 16, at 7 pm, at its headquarters, 5 Library Place, Danbury.
There are more than 150 people on a waiting list for help from the non-profit agency that recruits and trains volunteers to teach English as a second language and reading and writing skills to adults who want and need such instruction. There is no charge to the student for the instruction.
After an intense 15-hour training course, the volunteer is matched with one or more adult âlearnersâ to carry out a tutorial of two hours per week for a minimum of one year. Ingrid McCauley of Newtown and Ellen Cote of New Milford will teach the first training session scheduled for 7 to 9:30 pm Tuesdays and Thursdays from August 29 through September 14.
The second session will be held on Mondays and Thursdays from 7:30 to 9:30 from October 30 through November 16.
Refreshments will be served at the orientation meeting. The public is invited to attend.
