‘JEM SOUTHAM: UPTON PYNE’ AT YCBA THROUGH DEC. 30

AVV 9-14 #712435

NEW HAVEN, CONN. — “Jem Southam: Upton Pyne” is on view at the Yale Center for British Art through December 30.

One of the most significant photographers working in Britain today, Southam creates photographic narratives of landscape transformed by time and man. “Upton Pyne” chronicles six years in the life of an unprepossessing pond near the photographer’s home in Exeter, Devon.

From 1996 to 2001, Southam returned regularly to the site, recording the changing seasons and tenants’ attempts to make improvements to the landscape. The exhibition includes 21 large format photographs from the series.

Shown in the context of the British traditions of landscape representation, in which the center’s collections are steeped, Southam’s photographs ask one to reexamine notions of meaning and beauty in the landscape. The exhibition is organized in association with the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University.

The center is at 1080 Chapel Street. For general information, www.yale.edu/ycba or 203-432-2800.
