The Music Committee of Newtown Congregational Church is planning a free Twelfth Night Medieval Festival of music, dramatic readings, and feasting on Saturday, January 5, at 7:30 pm, at the church. All are invited to what organizers hope will be a joyous and meaningful celebration of Twelfth Night, a delightful end of the Christmas season.
This Epiphany event is a commemoration of the coming of the Magi as the first manifestation of the Christ to the Gentiles as spoken of in Matthew 2.
The story of Christâs birth and the time immediately thereafter will be presented in a pageant by the Newtown Congregational Church Choir and several guest singers dressed in period costumes and with a dramatic presentation of the Boarâs head. The choir will be accompanied by instruments and percussion appropriate to the season.
The celebration will draw on a variety of elements from many centuries, including music and dramatic texts both ancient and modern.
The choir will be joined by local singers and by Wendy Lucas, principal harpist with Bridgeport, Norwalk, and Ridgefield symphonies.
A highlight of the evening will come toward the end of the program when a King and Queen, selected by lottery from the audience, will be crowned and robed. Finally, the audience will be ushered into the churchâs Great Room â or Banquet Hall for the evening â for a Medieval feast of treats both savory and sweet.
The entire production is being directed by Dan Coffman, the churchâs choir director, and Maureen Kelly.
A reception with appropriate medieval foods will follow. The audience is invited to dress for the part in Medieval or Renaissance costume.
