OCTOBER 11: The Fairfield Bridle Trails Association will be holding its annual Hunter Trials Horse Show on Monday, October 11, starting at 8:30 am, at 889 Hulls Highway (at the corner of Wakeman’s Lane) in Southport. Entries will be taken the morning of the trials. The morning will be devoted to junior riders while the afternoon will be for adults of all skill levels. There will be clases for pairs and hunter teams for juniors and adults. There will be refreshments, lunch and a tag sale. Call Sue Eckert at 1-203-255-0148 for further information.

OCTOBER 23: The world famous Lipizzaner Stallions will be the focus of a special 30th anniversary presentation of the Dancing White Stallions on Saturday, October 23, at 2 and 7:30 pm, at the O’Neill Center in Danbury. The Lipizzaner Stallion is backed by 425 years of history. Tickets are $16 for adults, $14 for children 12 and under and seniors 60 and over. OCTOBER 24: The Northwest Connecticut Draft Horse Association will sponsor a Draft Horse Demonstration on Sunday, October 24, from 10 am to 4 pm, on Route 126 in Falls Village. The demonstration will include plowing, harrowing, log skidding, and corn binding. There will also be a horse shoeing demo at 12 noon and a harnessing demo at 1 pm. OCTOBER 24-31: The 41st annual Washington International Horse Show will be held at the USAirways Arena in Landover, Maryland, beginning October 24. Area barns can purchase a block of specially-discounted tickets from the USAirways Arena Box Office for their riders, friends and families for Barn Night on Thursday, October 28. NOVEMBER 4-7: The 116th National Horse Show will be at Madison Square Garden in New York Thursday, November 4, through Sunday, November 7. There will be a $10,000 and $25,000 Jumper Class competition on Opening Night and many other competitions, culminating in the $50,000 Budweiser Grand Prix on November 7. Tickets are available by calling 1-888-674-2733.

NOVEMBER 11-14: Equine Affaire, the Great American Horse Exposition, will return to the Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield, Massachusetts, November 11 through 14. There will be more than 200 different training clinics, seminars, and demonstrations featured in five venues throughout the four days. There will be nationally- and internationally-recognized horse trainers, coaches, competitors and other equine professionals who will be sharing their expertise (Richard Shrake, Jane Savoie, Anne Kursinski, Kerry Millikin, Brian Dygert, Elizabeth McMullen, Curt Pate and Don West just to name a few). Hunter Paces (Associated Bridle Trails)

OCTOBER 10: Middlebury Bridle Lands Association Fall Hunter Pace will be held from 8 am to 12 noon, at Larkin’s Farm on South Street in Middlebury. Lunch will be from 11 am to 2 pm. Rain or shine. All jumps have go-arounds. Safety helmets required. Note: This year’s pace will be shorter than last year’s. Call Sylvia Preston at 1-203-758-8637.

OCTOBER 17: Greenwich Riding and Trails Association Hunter Pace will be held at the Hughes/Wonham Field in Greenwich. Start time is 8 am, with cut off time at 12 noon. Riders in all divisions must wear approved protective head gear and boots with heels. Call Claire Reed at 1-203-637-8684.

OCTOBER 31: Newtown Bridle Lands Association Frost on the Pumpkin Hunter Pace will be held from 8 am to 12 noon. Lunch will be from 11 am to 2 pm. Entries close on October 20 (or when pace is full). OCTOBER 10: Fairfield County Hounds Hunter Pace wilol be held Sunday, October 10, on Curtis Road in Bridgewater. Features a newly-designed courses with go-arounds for all fences. A roast beef luncheon will be served. Begins at 10 am. Call Gigi Haber at 1-203-255-2522.

OCTOBER 17: The Rombout Hunt Hunter Pace will be held Sunday, October 17, at Gone Away Farm on Browning Road in Hyde Park, New York. All fences have go-arounds. Separate divisions for junior riders. Starts at 10 am, with luncheon included. Call Joan Cohen at 1-914-297-6182.

OCTOBER 24: The Windy Hollow Hunt Hunter Pace will be held Sunday, October 24, at Coal Treet Farm on Route 284 in West Town, New York. Appropriate protective head gear required. Pre-register by September 30. Gourmet lunch included. Call Teri Powers at 1-914-987-8315.

OCTOBER 31: The Golden’s Bridge Hounds Hunter Pace will be held Sunday, October 31, at Baxter Road in North Salem, New York. Awards ceremony will follow. Includes buffet lunch. All fences have go-arounds. Call Heidi Sweet at 1-203-778-3003 for further information.

Hunter Paces (Other)

OCTOBER 17: The Woodbury FFA will hold its annual Hunter Pace on Sunday, October 17, from 9 am to 2 pm, at the Dufour property in Watertown. There will be two divisions, Hunt (faster) and Hack (slower), which will be divisied into junior and senior categories if entries warrant it. All juniors must be 18 and under as of Januar 1, 1999; combined teams of juniors and seniors will be considered seniors. Pre-entry fee is $30 for juniors and $40 for seniors and must be received by October 12. Proof of current rabies vaccination and negative Coggin’s test are required. First place trophies and ribbons to 10th place will be featured as well as special fun awards. For further information or entries, call 1-860-355-0195.

OCTOBER 17: The Danbury Animal Welfare Society Walkathon will hold a five-mile measured walk on Sunday, October 17, at 1 pm, at King Street School in Danbury. Walkers will secure pledges and donations to help raise funds for the Danbury Animal Wefare Society. All monies will be used directly for the benefit of cats and dogs in the greater Danbury area. Wlkers will receive a free DAWS t-shirt (more than $50 in sponsors), free animal care information, refreshments, and a chance at door prizes. Bring along your canine companion.
