Fugitive Arrest

Newtown police report they charged James M. Ceperley, 40, of Unit 27, Meadowbrook Terrace Mobile Home Park, 55 Sugar Street, on August 5 as a fugitive from justice from Holmes County, Fla.

Newtown police said Florida police held a warrant for Ceperley’s arrest for a violation of probation charge stemming from an assault on a police officer.

Newtown police held Ceperley for an August 6 arraignment in Danbury Superior Court.

Purse Found

Between 8 and 9 pm on August 5, a purse was found inside the Dynasty Chinese Restaurant at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street. Police are holding the purse for safekeeping and ask that its owner contact them at 426-5841.

Main/Currituck

Motorist Karen Smith, 57, of 39 High Rock Road, who was driving a 1997 Ford F-250 pickup truck, stopped at a stop sign on Currituck Road at its intersection with Main Street on August 5, police said.

The Ford then turned left onto southbound Main Street, entering the path of northbound motorist Derik Hammer, 16, of Southbury, who was driving a 1991 Mitsubishi Eclipse, police said.

The vehicles collided. There no injuries. Police issued Smith a written warning for a stop sign violation.

SUV Damaged

Police report that a 1997 Toyota RAV-4, which was parked in the Hot Shots II parking lot at 130 Mt Pleasant Road on the afternoon of August 7, was damaged while parked there. Gareth S. Byrne, 26, of 145 Lakeview Terrace had parked the Toyota, police said. Police are investigating and ask anyone with information on the incident to contact them at 426-5841.

Intersection Crash

Motorist Carol Smith, 16, of 11 Crossbrook Road, who was driving a Volvo 850 sedan eastward on Wasserman Way, stopped at a red traffic signal at the intersection of Wasserman Way and Route 34 at about 7:30 pm August 4, police said.

Tractor-trailer truck driver Faruk Cepic, 40, of Clarkston, Ga., then turned left from Route 34 onto Wasserman Way, police said.

During the turn, the truck’s trailer made contact with the Volvo, police said. There were no injuries. Police said they were unable to determine responsibility for the collision. There was no enforcement action.

 

Blowout

State police report that motorist Gene Manford, 22, of East Haven was traveling on westbound Interstate 84 near Exit 10 about 2 am August 6, when the left rear tire of the 1998 Chevrolet Blazer he was driving blew out, causing the vehicle to go out of control and roll over.

Manford received minor injuries, state police said. They took no enforcement.

Mailbox Incident

Police are investigating a case of mailbox vandalism at a Saw Mill Ridge Road residence.

Sometime between 8 pm August 9 and 7:49 am August 10, someone removed a residential mailbox from the curbside in front of 10 Saw Mill Ridge Road. The mailbox was then left nearby.

A box of Kraft “Shake and Bake,” which is a baking product, was left in the mailbox post hole, police said.

Police ask anyone with information on the incident to contact them at 426-5841, or at the anonymous tip line at 270-8888.

Warrant

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Jason Visokay, 25, of Southbury turned himself in at the police station on the night of August 10 and was charged with three counts of second-degree failure to appear in court, plus charges of failure to drive to the right and evading responsibility.

The motor vehicle charges stem from automobile accident that occurred last December 25, police said. The other charges stem from Visokay’s not appearing in court to answer to the motor vehicle charges.

After posting $1,500 bail, police released Visokay for an August 26 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Great Hill Road

Police report they stopped motorist Jacob Larkin, 29, of Danbury on Great Hill Road about 12:45 pm August 10 and charged him with traveling too fast and with possession of less than four ounces of marijuana. Police said Larkin is scheduled to appear August 31 in Danbury Superior Court.

Newtown police said they turned over Larkin to Danbury police, who held an arrest warrant for him.

Vandalism

Police report they arrested a youth under age 16 on August 11 and lodged charges of first degree criminal mischief and interfering with police.

First degree criminal mischief, which is a felony, involves more than $1,500 of property damage. Details on the nature of the crime were not available on the morning of August 12.

 State law shields the identities of those arrested who are under age 16. Police said they released the  youth on a written promise to appear August 30 in Danbury Juvenile Court.

Four Charges

Police said they received an arrest warrant on August 10 from Danbury Superior Court and served it at court on August 11 against  Steve Buchholz, 21, of 104 Waterview Drive, who was in court on another matter.

Police said they charged Buchholz with two counts of second degree forgery and two counts of sixth degree larceny in connection with an incident which occurred in late May.

Buchholz was arraigned on those charges in court on August 11, police said.

Church Hill Collision

Police report a two-car accident on Church Hill Road in front of the Blue Colony Diner about 12:44 pm August 3.

Motorist Baik Um, 68, of Orangeburg, N.Y., who was driving a 1995 Toyota Camry westward, was making a left turn into the diner’s parking lot, when the Toyota collided with an eastbound 2004 Acura MDX sport-utility vehicle being driven by E. Brucker-Canizares, 48, of Westport, police  said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Um a written warning for making a restricted turn.
