The first-meet jitters, the electric anticipation that coach Ed Obloj likens to “waiting for your first child to be born,” was dispelled mighty quickly on Monday when the Newtown High School boys’ track team collected a pair of wins in its season opener.

The Nighthawks hammered Weston (which suffered through a broken-down bus just to get to Newtown High) 101-40, eased past Joel Barlow 84-65, and tied New Milford 74.5-74.5 to start off the 2001 season at 2-0-1.

“I’m really pleased with the results of the first meet, after having to battle the weather for two weeks,” said coach Obloj. “Our guys did a great job and all their hard work paid off. We’re looking for better and better things as the season progresses.”

There were stars . . . plenty of stars, alright.

Like senior Kyle Tobin, who not only captured first in the 110-meter high hurdles and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles (thus beginning defense of the South-West Conference championships he earned last May in those same two events), but also took first in the 200-meter dash to finish as a triple winner.

Like Stephen Ambrogio, who was first in the 100-meter dash at 11.5 (Newtown’s only other individual first-place finish), second in the triple jump and second in the long jump.

Like Blair Balmforth, who went second in the 100-meter dash just two-tenths of a second behind Ambrogio.

Like Peter Terrance, who took second in the 400 meters just a half-second off the lead.

Like Matt Regan, who had second-place finishes in the discus (falling just three feet short) and shot put (falling just eight inches short).

And like Dan Phillips, Dan Maxwell, Cuyler Bryant, Jeff Heller, Balmforth, John Ehlers, Tom Fullman, Terrance, Dave Rod, and Tobin, who got together in a variety of combinations to sweep the three relay events. It was Phillips, Maxwell, Bryant and Heller in the 4x800; Balmforth, Ehlers, Fullman and Terrance in the 4x100; and Rod, Terrance, Ehlers and Tobin in the 4x400.

The ‘Hawks will be taking next week off and will return to the track on Monday, April 23, when they host Masuk, Brookfield and New Fairfield.
