Dear Neighbor:
The NBLA needs your help now more than ever to attain our number one goal to preserve Newtownâs dwindling open space. As you are aware, Newtown has undergone a rapid increase in growth and development over the past decade. With the dawn of the new millennium we encourage you to join forces with the NBLA and let your voice be heard!
What is the NBLA? The NBLA is a nonprofit, volunteer organization formed in 1978 to foster an interest in horseback riding, to preserve, protect and maintain riding and hiking trails in Newtown. Since our Land Trust was formed in 1988, the NBLA has focused more and more on working with the landowners and developers to maintain crucial links to Newtownâs trail system. The NBLA exists only due to the hard work and dedication of its 100 plus members; however, we still need more.
Did you know⦠The Town of Newtown relies on the NBLA to assist in achieving their goals for preserving the Townâs open space, for providing continuous greenways and linkages to the open space, and to preserve the existing trails having public access rights. The NBLA needs more members covering greater areas in Newtown to further protect the Townâs open space.
What can you do to help? Be aware of the trails in your area and advise the NBLA of any development within them. In some instances, the developer may provide open space for the creation of new trails within the development! However, it is important that we act early in the development plans.
Do you need a horse to join? No. We encourage all those with a love of the outdoors and a sense of pride in their town to join. Many of our functions are done without horses, such as trail walks, trail clearings and markings, field trips and hosting various functions.
Other fun functions: The NBLA rides and walks in Newtownâs Labor Day Parade proudly carrying the âPreserving Our Open Spaceâ banner. The NBLA holds the Annual Frost on the Pumpkin Hunter Pace as featured in Connecticut magazine. The NBLA celebrates the Christmas holiday with its annual Christmas party at the Stony Hill Inn. Finally, the NBLA and the 2nd Company Governorâs Horse Guard co-host an annual sleigh rally centered at the picturesque Fairfield Hills Headquarters.
Please join: By joining the NBLA your $35 tax deductible contribution enables you to become part of a fantastic network of outdoor enthusiasts sharing in the goal of preserving the character and open space in this town we all love. As a member, you will receive NBLAâs monthly newsletter detailing the activities of the Club as well as any pertinent trail or town issues. We offer three monthsâ free advertising in our newsletter and discounts on purchases made at many local stores. The more members that join, the louder our voice will become!
