Open The Door

At The Senior Center

To the Editor:

Have you ever noticed how excited young children get when they spot that magic square that opens the door? They run up and push it so that they can open the door by themselves. They are showing independence. It is a small step, yet it means a lot to them to be able to open that big door. Those magic buttons can be found on most public buildings, but what I find amazing is that it cannot be found at our Senior Center.

Our Senior Center is an official site for the federally funded program for meals under Title 16. Our seniors and citizens with disabilities go there for socialization, exercise, and classes as well as the lunch program. There are many programs available there in which the seniors can continue to give back to the community. There is quilts of valor, the hats and mittens for the Newtown Fund gift basket, and the baby blankets program just to name a few.

Most of the citizens that attend the Senior Center are veterans or spouses of veterans. We have them to thank for our independence yet we are depriving them of a piece of theirs.

Sincerely,

LeReine Frampton
