Snapshot: Paul Arneth
Occupation: I retired from the US Airways Shuttle two years ago, where I was a pilot. Prior to the Shuttle, I worked for Eastern Airlines for 21 years. I graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1961. After graduation, I flew the A-4 Sky Hawk from the aircraft carrier Franklin D. Roosevelt.
How Long in Newtown: We moved to Newtown in 1971. Liz and I were both born and raised in Queens, New York City.
Biggest Change Seen in Town: Traffic and growth. Before exit 11, Toddy Hill was a country road.
Family: Liz and I married in 1962. Our son, Gavin, was born in 1964. Five days later I left on a 9-month deployment to the Mediterranean. Our second son, Evan, was born while I was on a nine-month deployment to Vietnam in 1966. Liz, and the other Navy wives, were very strong, courageous women. Gavin, 37, lives directly across from our home with his wife, Carolyn, and their children, Molly and Dan. He works for People's Bank in human resources. Evan, 34, lives in Milford with his wife, Lisa, and their daughter, Shanna. Evan is also an airline pilot and will start classes with American Airlines in September.
Pets: Our dog, Spike, died two years ago.
Hobbies: Sailing, golf, running, and biking.
Favorite Books and Authors: The Aubrey/Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian. O'Brian had written about 15 when I found the books five years ago. The month of January was a blur. I'd stay up until three or four in the morning reading one after the other.
Favorite TV Show: Frasier.
Organizations: Since retiring, I have been active in the Newtown Lions Club. We are also members of the Milford Yacht Club.
Most Vivid Memory of Newtown: Attempting to cross country ski down one of the trails in the Newtown Trails Book. I did a snowplow with my face, much to the delight of our neighbor, Janice Bernard. Liz knew better than to go that particular trail, but Janice and I went ahead.
Favorite Vacation Spot: Any sailboat going for an extended cruise. Two years ago, I crewed on a boat participating in the Marion (Massachusetts)-Bermuda Race.
Personal Philosophy: Try to give something back to the community for we are truly blessed to live here. Make it a better place for our children and grandchildren. I am fortunate to work with so many generous, talented people in the Lions Club. This year, the Duck Race was a new, untried project that was a bit of a risk. Yet, Jim Larin and his committee made it a success in spite of the weather. Gordon Williams saw the need to fund the playgrounds in Treadwell Park. Almost two years later we are approaching completion of the project. The motto of the Lions Club is "We Serve." I try to make it my motto.
