Bringing A CAN-Do Attitude To Special Ed

She is vibrant, energetic, and excited about her job at Sandy Hook School. Kerri Ann Colorusso is the new CAN teacher at the school.
Children with Alternate Needs is a special education classroom where children work in a smaller environment and the lessons are geared toward life and social skills.
Miss Colorusso has an undergraduate degree from Arizona State University in special education and a masterâs from Sacred Heart University in elementary education.
âI love the small groups of kids,â she said. âWhen I first started doing it, I worked with autistic children.â
Beginning in teaching, Miss Colorusso worked with a larger size class, but learned that she preferred smaller classes where she could have a more individualized impact on the children in her classroom.
âI learned my heart is with special education,â Miss Colorusso said. âSeeing the challenges and boundaries they overcome is worth it.â
The Newtown School District is one Miss Colorusso had heard great things about before she was able to become part of the team. She has taught in both public and private schools in the past. âI was at the right place at the right time. I like it,â she said. âI always heard good things about Newtown.â
Miss Colorusso enjoys roller blading, going to the gym, and reading. She lives in Brookfield, where she grew up, with her dog, Jake.
