Mike Fern canned five three-point baskets and scored 24 points to lead Pantan Landscaping to a 75-68 win over Total Pool & Spa in The Gym at Newtown Menâs Basketball League action last week.

Pantan Landscaping moved to 2-0 early in the season and sits tied for first with Newtown Phone Book, a 42-38 winner over Newtown Mobil in a low-scoring affair. My Place Pizza was the winner in the other contest of the night by a 71-65 count over Svanda Painting.

In Pantanâs win over Total Pool, Tim Byrne scored 21 points, Kevin Carolan chipped in with 15 points and Aaron Vangor added 10 as four players scored in double figures. For Total Pool, Scott Lavalleâs 36-point effort was wasted. Frank Galante added 14 points while Tom Santella and Phil Kraska combined for 14 more.

Corey Dunn scored 26 points and Jeff Moxham (with five treys) added 23 more to lift My Place Pizza over Svanda Painting. Mike Sullivan added 18 points and Pat Sullivan chipped in with four for My Place, which had just four players suited up. For Svanda, Jeff Haddad canned 21 points and Austin Bowes added 20 more. Matt Mariani chipped in with 18 points, all in the first half. All told, Svanda dropped in 12 three-pointers on the night â five for Haddad and four for Mariani.

Rob Merryfield scored 12 points and Steve Bigham added 11 as Newtown Phone Book slipped past Newtown Mobil. Rob Soltis added six points and Steve DâAmico chipped in with five. For Mobil, Adam Hayden had a game-high 16 points as Ken Oswald chipped in eight and Jim Parker added six.

Finally, The Time Has Come(And Some Reminders)

Not approving a development that has "checked" all the boxes because the NIMBY mob doesn't like it is wrong.

The town historically has strong collaboration with developers, but the primary obstacle arises from community opposition exerting undue influence on the zoning department. This "NIMBY" pressure often leads to project rejections that exceed the department's actual jurisdiction or authority. Consequently, developers face a limited set of options: either engage in expensive legal battles or leverage the Connecticut Affordable Housing Land Use Appeals Procedure (CGS § 8-30g) as a recourse.

You are correct, Bruce. I know how hard these plans are to put together, but I still believe that we can have more definitive and measurable goals. I know there are a number of units coming online, and the community truly needs them. If only we can move the development of affordable housing to more of a partnership between the community and the developers than the adversarial tug-of-war it seems to be now, that would be good progress.
