Volleyball Team Spikes The Competition

Newtown High School’s girls’ volleyball team blanked Bunnell of Stratford and Masuk of Monroe each in the minimum three games on October 12 and 15, respectively. The Nighthawks, coming off a 3-0 loss to Joel Barlow of Redding on October 10, improved to 10-3 with five matches to play before the start of the postseason.

Against Bunnell, Newtown won a trio of hard-fought games, 26-24, 25-22, and 25-19. Amanda Rowan had six kills and two blocks, Meghan Logan had 14 assists and five digs, Courtney Escoda compiled 14 digs, Cassie Ekstrom recorded three service aces and eight digs, Sam Steimle had 13 kills, Lauren Frazzetta had four kills and three digs, and Caroline Kelly had 15 digs.

In the victory over Masuk, Newtown came out on top 25-16, 25-14, and 25-13. Kyle Dandrea had 13 assists to go along with five digs, Logan had ten assists and six digs, Steimle had seven kills and four aces, Rowan had six kills, Kelly compiled ten digs and two aces, and Escoda logged seven digs.

The Nighthawks were scheduled to host New Milford on Wednesday (after The Bee sports section went to press) and will visit New Fairfield on Friday, October 19 at 5 pm. They return home to face Bethel on Monday, October 22 at 6:30 pm.
