Police Plan Sobriety Checkpoint For Weekend
Town police plan to conduct a sobriety checkpoint during the evening of Saturday, August 20, and the early morning hours of Sunday, August 21.
Police did not disclose the location of the drunken driving enforcement project.
Such checkpoints are held to reduce the number of alcohol-related driving injuries and fatalities through increased high-visibility enforcement of drunken driving laws, according to police Sergeant John Cole.
Police publicize such enforcement projects to deter motorists from driving while under the influence.
All motorists traveling in both directions through the checkpoint will be stopped and briefly interviewed to detect people who are driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, Sgt Cole said in a statement.
Police use grant money from the Federal Highway Safety program to cover 75 percent of the costs for the police overtime involved in staging such sobriety checkpoints.
