An Afternoon Of Poetry & Live Jazz Planned

SHERMAN — The Sherman Playhouse will host Afternoon of Poetry & Jazz on Sunday, September 30, from 2 to 4 pm. The poets reading at this free event, in alphabetical order, are:

*Joan Kantor, author of Shadow Sounds, first-prize winner for poetry in the FRLAC’s 2011 writing contest, and a poet-consultant and judge for Hill-Stead Museum’s annual Sunken Garden Poetry Festival’s Fresh Voices competition;

*Dimitri Rimsky, a lifelong resident of Washington (Conn.) who has been reading his poetry at various coffee houses and other venues since he was 18;

*Neil Silberblatt, author of So Far, So Good, an organizer of several local literary readings, including an Afternoon of Poetry & Jazz held at Washington Art Association last month as part of the WAA’s 60th anniversary celebration (as well as the Sherman event), and organizer of the first “open reading” by poets and writers at Danbury Library to be held on October 21, entitled “From Our Hands to Your Ears”;

*Karen Silk, author of Somewhere A Bird (to be published this fall), board member of the Lake Waramaug Task Force, and a director of the Washington Environmental Council; and

*Faith Vicinanza, author of Jupiter Colliding with the Sun, Faith Vicinanza’s Greatest Hits and Husband, co-author of My Not Quite Blank Book, recipient of the 1993 Connecticut Commission on the Arts Advocate for the Arts Award, executive director of the 1997 National Poetry Slam Championships and Connecticut Poetry Festival, and founder of the Wednesday Night Poetry Series — now in Bethel and Newtown — the longest running poetry reading series in Connecticut.

The musicians performing are Doug White (tenor sax), an accomplished composer and saxophonist and founder of the independent jazz label Juniper Records; and Steve Porter (bass), one of New England’s foremost jazz bassists and a member of Mr White’s various jazz groups.

The Sherman Playhouse is at 5 Route 39 North, at the corner of Route 37 (behind the firehouse). For additional information call 860-354-3622 or visit www.ShermanPlayers.org.
