TAMPA, Florida – Performing a nearly flawless routine, the Newtown Nighthawks sixth-grade cheerleading team took third place at the American Youth Football National Cheerleading Championships last weekend at the Sun Dome Arena at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida.

Through the generosity of the Newtown American Youth Football and Cheer League, as well as fundraising and donations from Newtown residents, all 25 girls were able to fly to Tampa as a team to compete.

There were seven teams in the Division 11 (Large) from Chicago, California, and New England. Performing in a giant arena and cheered by an enthusiastic crowd and in front of 12 judges, the girls performed with impeccable motions, amazing volume, and perfect lines and formations.

The New England teams all supported each other cheering as the Charlton/Dudley Rams and the Seacoast Titans, both from New Hampshire, took second and first place, respectively. It was a sweep for the New England Region!

Though the weather was cool for Florida, many of the girls were also able to visit area theme parks, swim outdoors, and enjoy relaxing with their team and family members. The girls and their families wish to thank all the local Newtown residents who so generously supported our Nighthawk team as they cheered outside local businesses.
