The last couple of weeks have been pretty busy – at least, athletically – for Bob Elliott.

On August 31 he guided the Blue Devils to a Rising Stars Summer Basketball League championship at Treadwell Park.

On September 1 he came in 358th overall at 31:04 in the second annual Newtown Road Race at Dickinson Park.

And on September 9 he captured his ninth consecutive Men’s Open Singles title (and 11th overall) in the annual Bertram Stroock Memorial Tennis Tournament at Dickinson Park.

Whew – time to take a break.

Elliott first won a Stroock title in 1995 and won again in 1997 before running off his string starting in 1999. And much like last year, Elliott had to defeat Matt Kaplan in the semi-finals and then Tim Hanley in the finals to grab the cup.

The draw was much larger this year than last, with 10 competitors in the Men’s Open Singles. Elliott, the top seed, drew a bye and then defeated Timo Roehrs to move on to the semi-finals. Hanley, the No. 2 seed, also earned a bye and defeated Dan Yee to advance to the finals.

Elliott secured the cup with a 6-0, 7-5 win.

Kelly Pickney grabbed the Women’s Open Singles title with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Stella Gabor. Pickney, the No. 1 seed, earned a bye and defeated Sonja Haskel in the semi-finals to advance to the championship match. Gabor defeated Helen Yee in her opening round match and then advanced to the finals with a win over Julie Stern.

There were seven competitors in the women’s draw; there were none in 2006.

In other action –

No. 1 seed Gene Bernard defeated Fred Steiner 6-3, 6-1 in Men’s 55 Singles; Dom Nocturne and John Reisert defeated Matt Kaplan and Gerhard Kutt 7-6, 6-1 in Men’s Open Doubles; Eileen Frattaroli and June Frost defeated Maura Fletcher and Maureen Maher 7-6, 6-1 in Women’s Open Doubles; and Dan Yee and Helen Yee defeated Sonja Haskel and Bruce Martin 6-2, 6-4 in Mixed Doubles.

In the annual Coopersmith Cup Junior Tournament Kai Hedin defeated Peter Winans in the Boys 10 and Under division; Max Brazo defeated Kevin Culligan in the Boys 14 and Under division; Evan Batzer defeated Max Brazo in the Boys 18 and Under division; Meghan Loose defeated Ali Brazo in the Girls 14 and Under division; and Patricia Culligan defeated Jenna Himmelfarb in the Girls 18 and Under division.
