A Neighbor’s Note Of Gratitude

To the Editor:

On Tuesday, June 5, our home on Riverside Road was struck by lightning.

As I rushed to the basement where the lightning entered, I noticed a small fire in the dryer vent and the house soon began to fill with smoke. I was concerned for the safety of our four cats as well the fire that could engulf our cherished 1746 house.

I called 911 and the Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire Department was almost immediately on the scene. Chief William Halstead and Michael Burton and all of the wonderful volunteer firefighters quickly dowsed the fire and ventilated the house of ever- thickening smoke. Chief Halstead assured me that he had seen the cats upstairs and that all was well.

My wife and I are deeply indebted to the untiring and selfless volunteering that is exemplified in this community by our Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire Department. A big thank you to all of the men and women of our fire department.
