Newtown Sea Scout Raising Funds For VFW American Flag Drop-Off

By Eliza Hallabeck

Water dripped down Tinkerfield Road from VFW Post 308 as volunteers worked to clean a silver truck around noon this past Saturday, August 13. Sea Scout and Boy Scout Robert “Bobby” Mascher stood by overseeing his Eagle Scout project in action.

Bobby said the car wash was part of his Eagle Scout project, which has him raising funds to cover the cost of installing a permanent drop-off location for retired American Flags at the VFW. By the end of July, Bobby had installed a used and refurbished red, white, and blue mailbox outside the Veterans of Foreign Wars, VFW, Post 308 site on Freedom Defenders Way, the cul-de-sac portion of Tinkerfield Road.

“I thought the best way to raise money would be through a car wash,” said Bobby, hose in hand with the truck parked behind him being cleaned off by assembled volunteers.

The car washes were free on Saturday between 9 am and 2 pm on Saturday, August 13, but donations to the effort were suggested.

Bobby is a member of Sea Scout Ship 110, and his troop leader Chip Rieve was also at the VFW on Saturday to lend a hand to the effort. Bobby is a 2011 graduate of Newtown High School and plans to attend the University of Massachusetts, Boston, in just a few weeks.

The Sea Scout program teaches “leadership through seamanship,” as Mr Rieve explained to The Bee in the past. Learn more at ship110-ct.org.

Bobby said further contributions to the effort to install a drop-off location for retired American flags can also be made by calling his father, Tom Mascher, at 203-512-1474. Contributions for the retired flag drop box can also be made by making checks payable to Ship #110: and send to VFW Post #308, 18 Tinkerfield Road, Newtown CT 06470.

Bobby also said local companies and groups helped make the project a success, including Bagel Delight, B&K Septic, Carminuccio’s Pizza, My Place Restaurant, N.J.K. Sunoco, Perform Printing, Pizza Palace, Sea Scout Ship #110, The Newtown Bee, VFW Post #308, Village Barber Shop, and Your Healthy Pet.
