DANBURY – Singles was the strongest segment of the Newtown High School boys tennis team in its impressive run in 2003, but only Justin Bass at fourth singles made it out of the first afternoon of play at Rogers Park in Danbury.

Jon Perachio (#1) defeated Jeff Kramer of Masuk, 8-4, in Round 1 and then suffered a 6-2, 6-2 loss to Erik Skartvedt in Round 2. Sean O’Mahoney (#2) suffered an 8-2 loss to Craig Spann of Joel Barlow in Round 1. And Matt McFadden (#3) took an 8-6 loss to Tony Pane of Masuk in Round 1.

But in fourth singles, Bass defeated Willie Chan of Pomperaug, 8-1, to advance to the second round. Head coach Marty Margulies felt he had an excellent chance to go all the way.

The second day of play was postponed until Thursday.
