Local Crop Walkers Receive Golden Sneaker Award
The annual Newtown-Sandy Hook Crop Walk to support hunger projects has received the 2004 Golden Sneaker Award from the tri-state office of Church World Service. The local Crop Walk, held in May of 2003, had the greatest percentage of growth in walkers participating and in funds raised for the tri-state region of Connecticut, New York, and Rhode Island.
The Newtown-Sandy Hook walk also posted the largest increase in funds received in Connecticut for the year. More than $5,600 was raised by the 2003 Crop Walk, of which $1,300 was returned to the Newtown area for local hunger programs. The local funds for 2003 were donated to the FAITH Food Pantry in Sandy Hook and to the Dorothy Day Hospitality House in Danbury.
The 2004 Crop Walk is set for May 2 and again will be under the leadership of Pastor Greg Wismar from Christ the King Luthern Church as chairman and Carol Foss of the Newtown Congregational Church as treasurer.
People from all of the Newtown churches as well as from the wider community annually participate in this special charitable event.
