Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multipurpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 203-270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon, for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Walmart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 203-748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*Hearing screening sponsored by Belltone will be Tuesday, December 14, starting at 1 pm. Appointments are necessary. A screening takes 15 minutes.

*Senior Van trip on Wednesday, December 15, will stop at the Christmas Tree Shop, then lunch at the Cracker Barrel. Limit is 12.

*Wii bowling party will be Thursday, December 16, at 1 pm.

*Watch UConn Women’s Basketball vs Ohio State on Sunday, December 19, at Madison Square Garden. Drop off at Herald Square first for shopping and lunch. Cost is $59, lunch not included.

*Classes for chair yoga, a softer and more soothing experience, will be held on Tuesdays from 3 to 4 pm and Fridays from 11:45 to 12:45.

*Fuel assistance applications and Medicare Part D applications will be accepted through December 31. Call the Newtown Senior Center in advance for requirements.

 

Upcoming Programs

*Christmas bingo will be Tuesday, December 21, at 1 pm.

*The Newtown Senior Center will close at noon, December 23, and reopen on Monday, December 27. The center will close on December 30 at noon and reopen on Monday, January 3. Happy Holidays.

 

Day Trips

*Celebrate Valentine’s Day at Mohegan Sun on February 10 and 11. There is a bonus package at check-in, $20 free bet or two buffets, breakfast on the second day, and depart for Mystic Cornerstone Production to see a matinee of Moonlight in Mystic. Cost is $204 single, $144 double, or $139 triple.

*Between February 25 and 27, enjoy an illuminated monument tour of National Air & Space Museum, visit the National Archives, The Newseum, and watch the UConn Women play Georgetown. Cost includes two nights at the Hampton Inn, two breakfasts, two dinners, and your tours. Cost is $391 double, $481 single, and $371 triple.

 

Recurring Activities

*Yoga classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*Billiards room; poker/card room; ping pong; and Wii bowling, golf, tennis, and baseball.

*Wii BOWLING, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.

*MAKE CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 10 am with Mary Matern.

Monday: AM hatha yoga, exercise, PM chorus group, art class.

Tuesday: AM line dancing, cards for troops; PM Tai Chi, pinochle, poker, gin rummy etc, Wii bowling.

Wednesday: AM bridge, exercise; PM pinochle, poker, gin rummy etc.

Thursday: AM hatha yoga, pinochle, poker, gin rummy etc; PM Scrabble.

Friday: AM Mah Jongg, quilting, exercise, chair yoga; PM knitting/crocheting.

 

Menu For Week Of December 13–17

Monday: Swedish meatballs served over noodles, Scandinavian blend veggies, whole wheat bread, diet fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.

Tuesday: Cream of tomato soup with crackers, grilled cheese sandwich, Caesar salad with croutons and dressing, seasonal fresh fruit.

Wednesday: Sliced turkey with gravy, herbed stuffing, country style vegetables, cranberry sauce, wheat dinner roll, cranberry juice, chocolate brownie.

Thursday: Beef Wellington, twice baked potato, peas and mushrooms, snowflake dinner roll, holiday cake.

And for planning ahead—

Monday, December 20: Baked pork loin with gravy, applesauce garnish, fresh sweet potato, Greek-style green beans, seedless rye bread, chocolate chip cookie.

Tuesday, December 21: Cheese and beef baked ziti with parmesan cheese, Roman blend vegetables, chopped spinach, Italian bread, mixed fruit juice, apricot halves.
