Scholarships Arrive At Newtown High School
The following Scholarships have arrived in the Career Center at Newtown High School. Applications and/or information for these scholarships, as well as ones previously listed in The Bee, are available there. Please call Mrs McEvoy at 426-1915 if you have any questions.
NEWTOWN SCHOLARSHIP ASSOCIATION â for high school seniors who reside in Newtown (do not have to attend Newtown High School) and will be attending college in the fall of 2000. The number and amount of scholarships vary. This is an excellent source of financial assistance for the students of Newtown! Students who wish to apply must also submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (F.A.F.S.A.) to the Federal Government as relevant documents from this process are needed. Application deadline is April 14, 2000.
THE WELLER FOUNDATION, INC. VINCENT VOCCIA VOCATIONAL AWARD â the purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to students planning a career in the skilled trades (examples of acceptable programs are: Auto/Truck Maintenance, Machine, Design (CAD), Culinary Arts, Hairdressing, Secretarial, etcâ¦) See Mrs Waterbury for more information. For seniors who are full-time students at Masuk, Newtown, Trumbull, Joel Barlow or Shelton High School. Financial need is not a factor. There will be one applicant selected from Newtown High School. Applications must be in to the Career Center by March 24, 2000.
THE ROBERT J. GLANDER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP â a $1,000 scholarship for a Newtown resident who will be graduating high school this year, intends to continue his/her education, and who has been a member of a Newtown Babe Ruth Baseball or Newtown Softball Association team. Application must be received on or before April 1, 2000.
STOP & SHOP/GENERAL MILLS/JAMâN 94.5/WTIC 1080 AND 96.5 TIC-FM â in honor of Black History Month (but it doesnât appear to be limited to African-Americans), a $5,000 college scholarship opportunity for junior and senior high school students. Applications are available at local Stop & Shop stores but can also be entered by following directions on file in the Career Center. Deadline for receipt of applications is March 15, 2000.
P.L.A.T.O. â is offering college-bound high school students a chance to receive $1,000, $5,000 or even $10,000 for college. Scholarships are merit-based and applicants must have a grade point average of 2.75 or higher (on a 4.0 scale). It appears that this is a Web site dedicated to supplying undergraduate and graduate loans and also has a free online scholarship search (our only knowledge of this site is by the letter we received announcing this scholarship so we donât know how reputable it is). It looks like this scholarship program is used to get you to check out their Web site as this is the only method they give for applying â online at www.plato.org. For those of you without the use of a computer, their toll-free number is 800/263-3527. Of course, students can use the computers in the Career Center as well. They donât give a deadline but say that applications will be accepted beginning February 1, 2000.
CONNECTICUT PTA AND NUTMEG STATEWIDE PTA SCHOLARSHIPS â three awards will be presented to graduating seniors from PTA/PTSA high schools at the CT PTA State Convention in May 2000. The PTA will present two awards of $1,000 each in memory of Christa McAuliffe and the NSPTA will present one award in the amount of $5,000 in memory of Joseph Pearson. The students must be planning to attend a four-year college to pursue, for the CT PTA awards, a career in teaching and, for the NSPTA award, a career in service to children. There is a separate essay for each category. The CT PTA award asks, âWhat is your reason for entering the teaching profession?â and the NSPTA topic is, âHow do you expect to be serving children ten years after college graduation?â They also want a brief account of applicantâs school/community involvement (separate typed sheet, no more than one page, one side). The Newtown High School Scholarship Committee can only nominate one candidate for each category. Therefore, all essays must be in to the Career Center before noon on Monday, February 28.  (The application is a single sheet that can be filled out when you bring in your essay[s] and brief account of school/community involvement. This was received only a few days ago in our office and the deadline for receipt by CT PTA office is February 29, 2000 â we apologize for the rush for those who wish to apply for this.)
