Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multipurpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 203-270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon, for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Walmart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 203-748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*On Wednesday, November 24, 1 pm, watch The Amazing Adventure with Cary Grant. Can he keep his wager to not use his trust fund for one year?

*The Newtown Senior Center will be closed November 25 and 26 in observance of Thanksgiving.

*Fuel assistance applications and Medicare Part D applications will be accepted through December 31. Call the Newtown Senior Center in advance for requirements.

 

Upcoming Programs

*Officer Maryhelen McCarthy will give informative driving tips for the winter season on Tuesday, November 30, at 12:30 pm.

On Thursday, December 2, at 1 pm Christmas Vacation with Chevy Chase will be the movie feature. A fun-filled old-fashioned family Christmas is planned…uh-oh!

Chair yoga, a softer, soothing experience, will begin Tuesday, December 7, from 2 to 3 pm, and Friday, December 10, from 11:45 to 12:45.

*Hearing screening sponsored by Belltone will be Tuesday, December 14, starting at 1 pm. Appointments are necessary. A screening takes 15 minutes.

*Wii bowling party will be Thursday, December 16 at 1 pm.

Day Trips

*Annual Christmas party will be Wednesday, December 8, from 11:30 am to 3 pm, at the Waterview, with gourmet buffet, music and entertainment, and a champagne toast. A 50/50 raffle and raffle for gift baskets will be offered. Call 203-270-4310 for reservations. Cost is $35; payment due at time of sign-up. NOTE: The Senior Center will be closed this day.

*Visit the Wadsworth Atheneum’s museum and holiday tree display, Mark Twain House with Victorian decorations & interiors by Tiffany, and lunch at the Chowder Pot for a Christmas in Connecticut on Friday, December 10. Depart at 9:15 am; cost is $78.

*Senior Van trip on Wednesday, December 15, will stop at the Christmas Tree Shop, then lunch at the Cracker Barrel. Limit is 12.

*Save the date for UConn Women’s Basketball vs Ohio State on Sunday, December 19, at Madison Square Garden. Departure time and cost to be announced at a later date.

 

Recurring Activities

*Yoga classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*Billiards room; poker/card room; ping pong; and Wii bowling, golf, tennis, and baseball.

*Wii BOWLING, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.

*MAKE CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 10 am with Mary Matern.

Monday: AM hatha yoga, exercise, PM chorus group, art class.

Tuesday: AM line dancing, cards for troops; PM Tai Chi, pinochle, poker, gin rummy etc, Wii bowling.

Wednesday: AM bridge, exercise; PM pinochle, poker, gin rummy etc.

Thursday: AM hatha yoga, pinochle, poker, gin rummy etc; PM Scrabble.

Friday: AM Mah Jongg, quilting, exercise, chair yoga; PM knitting/crocheting.

 

Menu For Week Of

November 22–26

Monday: Salisbury steak with gravy, mashed potato, diced carrots, wheat dinner roll, mandarin oranges.

Tuesday: Caribbean chicken, rice and beans, green beans, oat bread, pineapple juice, seasonal fresh fruit.

Wednesday: Chicken orzo soup with crackers, haddock with spinach and tomato, brown rice, garden peas, wheat bread, peach slices.

Thursday: Closed

And for planning ahead —

Monday, November 29: Cheese lasagna, sausage, Italian blend vegetables, parmesan cheese, garlic bread, diet fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.

Tuesday, November 30: Sweet and sour meatballs served over egg noodles, wax beans, herbed breadstick, chocolate chip cookie.
