Baseball Team Overcomes Tough Loss To Win Two

The Newtown High School baseball team started the season in heart-breaking fashion, dropping a 4-2 decision in nine innings to visiting Pomperaug in the season-opener on April 8. It was the kind of game â a low-scoring nail-biter â the Nighthawks expected to have to win in order to have success.
The Nighthawks stand to have their share of chances to bounce back in close pitching duels as the season unfolds, but the team has found another way to win at least in the early going: by large margins.
The Nighthawks didnât leave any suspense in each of their next two games, winning both by four runs. The Hawks defeated Ridgefield 8-4 on April 9 and toppled Immaculate 7-3 on Monday.
In the win over Immaculate, No. 2 hitter Kyle Kromberg had four hits (a pair of singles, a double and triple) and drove in four runs.
In the early going the offense has clicked with No. 3 hitter Brandon Rosenberger, a junior catcher, No. 5 hitter Bryan Czel, a sophomore left fielder and No. 9 hitter, Ryan Tita, a sophomore shortstop, all hitting extremely well and producing at the plate.
NHS Coach Carl Strait expected the pitching to be the teamâs strong point this year but the hitters have been a pleasant surprise thus far.
âTop to bottom theyâre surprising us with the sticks,â Strait said of his lineup.
The Nighthawks were scheduled to visit Masuk on Wednesday (after The Bee sports section went to press), will go to Stratford on Friday and return home to play New Milford on April 20.
