It looks like it could turn into quite a rivalry.

After defeating the Connecticut Charmers in the early stages of the recent Amateur Softball Association (ASA) tournament, the Charmers have turned the tables on the Newtown Hawks and won their next two meetings.

The most recent was Monday night at Liberty Fields.

Despite a two-run homer from Kaila Harrington, the Hawks dropped a heartbreaking, 5-4, decision and saw their record slip to 8-3 on the season. The Hawks rallied from a 4-1 deficit to tie the game at 4-4, but the Charmers scored the game-winner in the seventh.

The Hawks scored their first run in the third inning as Kate Bowen led off with a sharp single to left center. She reached third with a pair of stolen bases and scored on a ground out by Nora Lynn Shimko.

Later in the sixth inning, down 4-1, the Hawks rallied. Shimko led off with a single, stole second and scored on an RBI-single by Ally Modzelewski. Harrington then stepped to the plate and belted a sensational shot to right center for her first home run of the year.

Caitlin Cosgrove doubled for the Hawks while Elissa Robertson collected a single to help spark the offense. Bowen and Megan Sajovic combined on the mound for a three-hitter.

Things went better – a lot better – in a Connecticut Valley Fastpitch League (CVFL) regular season game against Town Plot of Waterbury. With Elissa Robertson notching two hits (with a double) and Marley Koschel doubling, the Hawks pounded Town Plot, 30-0. Laura Newberry, Shimko, Caitlin Cosgrove, Harrington, Annemarie Davis and Sajovic each banged out singles.

Shimko, Bowen and Monique Samuelson combined for the shut out on the mound.

The Hawks will go on to participate in the Connecticut State Babe Ruth Tournament this weekend in Hamden.
