Victorian Lady Will Visit

Local Library This Month

BROOKFIELD — On Wednesday, January 19, Kandie Carle, performing as The Victorian Lady, will present “Dressing from Corset to Gloves: Fashion and Society of the 1860s.” The program will be held from 7:30 to 9 pm at The Brookfield Library, on Route 25 in Brookfield Center.

A dessert reception, sponsored by The Brookfield Historical Society, will be held from 7 to 7:30.

Remember the scene in Gone With the Wind with Scarlett being laced into her corset? The presentation will explain not only the corset, but all the other clothing required by a lady of the 1860s.

This is not a fashion show. Ms Carle takes her audience on a voyage of discovery using clothing as a tool.

She dresses in layer upon layer of the clothing and accessories of the period.  As each piece is added, she explains its use, how it is worn, and when and where it was appropriate. Throughout her presentation, Ms Carles shares insights into the lifestyle, manners, etiquette, and customs of men, women, and children of the time.

Kandie Carle has worked in the theater for the past 25 years as an actress, dancer, and singer. She has assembled a vast collection of authentic Victorian and Edwardian clothing and accessories dating from the mid-19th Century to the turn of the 20th century.

Registration is requested. Call the library at 775-6241 or visit the library’s check-out desk to sign up for the program in person.
