Main Street Ghost Walk & Candlelight Tours Planned
Newtown Historical Society’s Ghost Walk through the center of town will be offered Saturday, October 17, with tours departing at 5:30 and 7 pm.
Following last year’s sold out performance, Martha Bishop will again lead two walks along Main Street telling ghostly stories. The walks will start from The Matthew Curtiss House, at 44 Main Street, and each will be followed by a candlelight tour of the house conducted by costumed docents.
Registration is required by email, at register@newtownhistory.org; a fee of $5 per person or $15 per family is payable at the event. Reservations should include the number of people in a party, and which tour is preferred. Each tour will last approximately one hour.
Members, including those who join that night, will receive a discount of $3 per person or $10 per family.
Martha “Marty” Bishop is a former teacher and school librarian. She is an accomplished actress, well known in local community theater.
A member of the CT Storytelling Center, Ms Bishop organizes the Tellabration Celebration in Newtown and Bethel each year. She is the author of a children’s book, and plays violin in the band Senior Melodiers. She has conducted ghost tours in Bethel for several ears as well as last year’s Newtown walk.
The Matthew Curtiss House is a fine example of colonial saltbox architecture, constructed about 1750. Purchased in 1781 by Matthew Curtiss and lived in until his death in 1824, the house was purchased in 1971 by Newtown Historical Society and maintained as a house museum. It is normally open in the daytime, so this is a rare chance to tour the house in the evening.
