GARRISON, New York – For the first time ever, Boscobel Restoration in Garrison, New York will celebrate Horse and Carriage Day on Sunday, October 3, from 12 noon to 4 pm. The Mid-Hudson Driving Association will be on-hand to parade their horse-drawn vehicles.

Other highlights include competitive events and horse-drawn wagon rides around the property.

When Boscobel was built in the early part of the 19th century, horse-drawn vehicles were the principal mode of transportation. With no train at that time, New Yorkers would have traveled to the Hudson Highlands by boat or by stagecoach. Affluent residents, such as the Dyckman family of Boscobel, would have gone visiting neighbors, shopping and riding through the countryside for pleasure in a carriage drawn by a team of well-matched horses.

Highlights of Horse and Carriage Day include a narrated parade of horse-drawn vehicles beginning at 1 pm, competitive events to highlight the skill of both horse and driver, and horse-drawn wagon rides around the property for guests. At Boscobel, as they gaze out on the spectacular view of the Hudson River, visitors will be able to imagine themselves in a time gone by, long before the advent of the horseless carriage we have become so dependent on today.

A neoclassical style mansion featuring decorative arts of the Federal period, Boscobel was built in 1804-1808 by States Morris Dyckman and is located on a bluff overlooking the Hudson. From the front lawn at Boscobel, one can see the Constitution Marsh Sanctuary and Constitution Island immediately below. To the south one sees the Bear Mountain Bridge, the United States Military Academy at West Point is directly across the river, and Storm King Mountain is to the north.

Boscobel is located on scenic Route 9D, just eight miles north of the Bear Mountain Bridge and one miles south of Cold Spring. Admission to the event is included with purchase of either a guided tour of the mansion or $10 for adults, $9 for seniors, and $7 for children ages six to 14. A grounds-only ticket is available for $7 for adults and $5 for children 6-14.

Children under six are admitted at no charge.
