Two Newtown swimmers represented The Regional YMCA of Western Connecticut Mako Swim Team at the Wilton YMCA AA Invitational Meet, which hosted top swimmers from across the region January 25-27.
In order to participate, the swimmers had to meet stringent USA swim cut off times and 14 Mako swimmers qualified. The meet had a preliminaries/finals format in which the fastest 12 swimmers from each preliminary event faced-off in a final competition.
The preliminaries were swum in yards, whereas the finals were in long course meters due to the Olympic year.Â
Newtown swimmers Richard Huffman and Zack Moliver both had strong performances. Richard Huffman, 11, took three top-10 spots starting with an impressive third-place finish in the 50 meter backstroke (36.42), 10th in the 100 meter backstroke (1:22.01), and 11th in the 50 meter butterfly (38.66). Huffman also swam in the 50 yard freestyle and 50 yard breaststroke. Moliver, 19, placed 16th in the 50 yard freestyle (24.74) and 21st in the 100 yard backstroke (1:03.76). Moliver also swam in the 100 yard backstroke.
Other Makos swimmers were from Brookfield, Sherman, New Milford and Danbury.
