The True Meaning

Of Christmas

To the Editor:

Just as I was questioning the real meaning of Christmas, the act of a total stranger changed my opinion of what it means to possess true holiday spirit.

While waiting on yet another long line, my teenage son somehow lost his Christmas money. I saw the panicked look on his face as he searched his pockets and scanned the floor only to finally realize that it was gone.

As Brendan continued to retrace his steps in the store and I half-heartedly looked around the parking lot, a man stopped me. He had been in line with us and witnessed the futile search. He expressed how badly he felt about the incident and asked how much money was lost. It was then that I realized that these savings were from the birthday checks that my son had received only days ago — money he would use to buy gifts for his family and best friend.

When my son later approached me in the grocery store, his expression told me that his search was unsuccessful. We sadly turned to finish our errands when the man from the parking lot appeared once again. Before we could speak, he presented a bank envelope to Brendan. He said he remembered how it felt when he lost money as a boy and hoped that Brendan would do the same for someone else when the time came.

At 2:30 pm on Christmas eve we were privileged to cross paths with a man who took the time to walk to the bank, place four $20 bills in a holiday gift card and find us in a crowded shopping center.

We will never forget his kindness and the day he taught us the true meaning of Christmas — to give without seeking anything in return and to be caring and compassionate, when it is least expected yet forever appreciated.
