The Voter's Duty
The Voterâs Duty
To the Editor:
In Newtown, we like to complain about taxes, about our elected officials, about decisions made by others. But the real blame should be laid on the voters of Newtown. We have a horrendous voter turnout. And even those voters who do come to the polls are often voting without really understanding the candidates or their positions on issues.
The majority of our elected officials are committed volunteers. They arenât paid for serving the community. They are making a choice to serve, often spending a tremendous amount of time away from family and friends, and that deserves our respect and appreciation.
But as voters, we need to take the small amount of time required to understand these dedicated volunteers. Do they have any experience? What are their stands on specific issues? Can I trust them to make important decisions? Are they balanced, or following some party line? Will they listen to me? Will they keep me informed? Do they have the dedication to really commit their time to serve our community?
Iâm a registered Republican, but I vote for the best candidates, and I know that in this election I will vote for some Republicans, some Democrats, and several IPN candidates. I also know that each of these parties has candidates worthy of my respect, but not my vote.
Itâs difficult to affect a national vote â but every vote in our local election counts. Please take the time to understand our candidates, take responsibility, and vote.
