The Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard is glad to have Staff Sgt. Paul Mazzara back from active duty in Afghanistan with the Connecticut National Guard.

Mazzara was stationed with Charlie Company, 1-102nd Infantry for a year and upon his return, resumed his position as Second Company Platoon Sergeant.

Mazzara, the son of Paula and Robert, grew up in Wallingford and graduated from Sheehan High School. He attended Post University, majoring in Equestrian Management. Mazzara worked as a dressage instructor for several years and then, in 2001, became a police officer in Milford.

Mazzara joined the Second Company in 1989, at age 18. He has held lots of different positions during his many years of service and continues to ride regularly on his favorite mount, Zeus.

Mazzara enlisted in the Connecticut National Guard in May of 2005. He was assigned to Charlie Company, 1-102nd Infantry, and completed Basic Training at Fort Benning, Georgia. Charlie Company shipped out to Afghanistan in April of 2006 and returned in May of 2007.

Before returning home, Mazzara attended the Warriors’ Leaders course at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.

Almost immediately, he resumed full duties as Platoon Leader at the horse guard. His experience in the Connecticut National Guard served to strengthen his commitment and dedication to organization and the armed forces of the state of Connecticut.

The Second Company has been serving the citizenry of Connecticut since 1808 and is one of the oldest Cavalry Units in continuous service in the United States. Troopers participate in ceremonial events including parades, funeral honor squads, gubernatorial inaugurations, presidential inaugural parades and other events at the order of either the Governor or the Adjutant General.

Members are also dedicated to preserving the history of the cavalry in Connecticut.

The troopers – especially Second Lieutenant Jennifer Taylor, Paul’s wife, welcomed Mazzara home. Lt. Taylor and Mazzara reside in Newtown within minutes of the company grounds at Fairfield Hills.
