Relay For Life Seeks Photographs
The Survivors Committee of the Newtown Relay for Life Committee is looking for photographs of cancer survivors and persons who lost their lives to cancer to be honored at the June 12â13 relay in Newtown.
Photographs may be dropped off to Alice Mascher at Bob Tendler Real Estate, 17 Church Hill Road. All photographs must be received by June 1. Anyone who has questions can call Ms Mascher at 426-5679.
Relay For Life is the American Cancer Societyâs signature event, taking place in Newtown and more than 4,000 communities in the United States. The relay is a unique 24-hour community event that allows individuals from all walks of life to join in the fight against cancer.
The relay is an overnight event that raises cancer awareness and funds for research, education, advocacy, and patient service programs. The event is a celebration of life for cancer survivors, a memorial for loved ones lost, and a rally for the community to fight cancer.
All cancer survivors â anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer â are invited to join in a complimentary celebration dinner that will take place on June 12 at the relay at Newtown High School. Those who are interested in attending should email their name and address to relaysurvivor@yahoo.com or call Joan Storms at 426-1645 or Peg Redmond at 426-3937 to receive an invitation.
Relay for Life began in 1985 when Dr Gordy Klatt from Tacoma, Wash., decided to walk and run 24 hours for cancer. He completed 83 miles and raised $27,000. The next year he recruited other participants and Relay for Life has been in existence ever since, according to the American Cancer Society website, www.cancer.org.
On the night of the relay, teams of eight to 15 members will gather with tents and sleeping bags to join with 4,200 communities nationwide that sponsor relays. Relay For Life brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, and churches. Teams seek sponsorship prior to the relay, all with the goal of eliminating cancer.
Volunteers are still needed to recruit teams, seek community support, coordinate logistics, find refreshments and prizes, plan entertainment, and lend their support in any way.
To volunteer to help the Relay For Life Committees, contact Dawn Escoda at 270-7541 or Ivette Gerics at 426-3589.
