Childrenâs Programs
The following programs are all being offered during the week of July 15-22 at the library:Â
*Go For the Stars: A Multimedia Program About Space Exploration, Friday, July 15, 4 pm, for ages 5 and up;
*Crafts Around the World: Mondays, drop in between 1 and 3, until August 8, for ages 4-9 (and their parents), on July 18 we will be making maracas;
*âKeith Munslow: A Wickedly Funny Guy,â Tuesday, July 19, 4 pm, suitable for ages 5 and up, stories and humor from childhood;
*PJ Story Time: Tuesdays at 6:30 pm, popular family program features stories, silly songs and a puppet show for ages 3-7, pajamas encouraged, July 19 will be The Elephantâs Sneeze;
*Cooking Around the World, Wednesdays at noon, ages 8-10 invited to explore the cuisines of Syria, Vietnam, India, Peru and Morocco, online registration requested, $5 material fee due day of the program; andÂ
*The Story of Hooper, the Katrina Rescue Dog, Friday, July 22, at 3:30, featuring author Jane Paley and Hooper, a yellow lab rescued after Hurricane Katrina, for ages 5 and up, copies of book available during program ($16).
 Future events include Creating from Clay with Randi Rote, Thursday, July 28, 3 pm, $5, for ages 5-8; âWe All Laugh in the Same Language,â Friday, July 29, 4 pm, with award-winning entertainer Les Julian, ages 5 and up; and Papillion: Le Raconteur Acadien, with a gumbo of Cajun, Zydeco and New Orleans songs and stories, for ages 5 and up.
For Young Adults
*The Teen Summer Reading Challenge for students entering grades 6-12 is in full swing. Every time you finish a book, fill out a summary at the YA display, take it to the desk and receive one ticket for every 50 pages. Then come back and deposit your tickets in the raffle boxes of your choice.
There will be drawings on Mondays, July 18 and August 8. All participants will be entered into the Grand Prize Drawing for a Kindle Wi-Fi, which will be done August 8.
*Bone Jewelry Craft: On Thursday, July 28, at 1 pm, Katie Stevenson will lead a 90-minute program to create distinctive jewelry from beads and small bone pieces. Limited to 15 young people entering grades 6-12, $6 will be payable at program and online registration is requested.
*Mehndi Henna Body Art: On Wednesday, August 3, from 1:30-3:30, henna artist Nev Levin will apply henna tattoos for ages 10-18. Parental permission slips will be required at drop-off. Sign up online.
Adult Programs
 *Edible Book Contest: Make something edible and book related and bring your creation to the library Saturday, July 16, at 10 am, for our first Edible Book Contest. You do need to register for this program. Forms are available at the first and second floor circulation desks. Prizes will be awarded in a variety of categories.
Donât have time to be creative? Come as a spectator, and see what fellow creative residents have come up with.
*History of Connecticut Wine: Amy Nawrocki and Eric Lehman will discuss their new book, A History of Connecticut Wine, on Friday, July 22, at 6:30 pm. A wine and local cheese tasting will be held in conjunction with the talk. Registration, online or in person, is a must.
*Needle Felting with Katie Stevenson: A class for anyone who loves fiber art, Katie Stevenson will teach this fun and creative craft on Monday, July 25, at 1:30 pm. There is a $6 supply fee due at the start of class. Optional kits will available for purchase. Space is limited so registration is required.
*Escapes and Intrigues â Classic Thrillers for Summer Reading: Julie Stern, a retired teacher of English and philosophy will be back at the library this summer to lead a discussion on classic mysteries. The next program will be Tuesday, July 26, at 7:30 pm, concerning Rogue Male by Geoffrey Household.
